BRILLIANT FABULOUS FANTASTIC I copied the entire thing into a writing file for future reference for Ophelia XD Thank you so much for that!

It’s also fun to me how the neurosparkles have quite a bit of overlap.

Like the rejection sensitivity, “Everyone in this store hates me” phenomenon, masking, and this bit!

Oh and the more nervous we are the less inhibitors we have so like you know how tipsy people get more and more free with themselves and less concerned with consequences – well that’s what happens when we get overstimulated we get “high” on happy chemical we’re deficient in but NTs have normally.

Which is how I can absolutely sing in front of a large crowd if I’m overstimulated enough but can’t even chat with someone at home if I feel the slightest apprehension

Like SAME! I am usually pretty reserved and composed but the second I get the rush of adrenaline from being scared out of my mind I get giggly and honestly twice as funny as I usually am. Or at least. I think that in the moment. For some reason people never laugh when I crack a joke right after a near-death experience. Bizarre of them.

      @lady-grace

      Sorry this took a while!

Ok, interesting I feel like that’s all I’m saying XD So at what point does someone know they’re Autistic? Like, how many traits?

      Actually! I have an answer!

Here you go, this is the DSM diagnostic criteria for Autism in adults. (Rooted around through way too many links from decidedly… iffy autism resources.)

It’s a bit information dense and clinical, not to say a little pathologizing, but a good overview! It also says how many of these traits you need for a theoretical diagnosis.

Also, it helped me a lot to find the traits by remembering when I was little. I used to have issues I don’t have anymore, mostly because I learned to work around them or mask over them.

You might show traits in a somewhat different way than described, but it doesn’t mean it’s completely absent. Like, for example, in the first category, ‘Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity’ I barely match anything, but I am constantly hyper-aware of it because I know I’ll slip into it when I don’t pay enough attention, and it gave me something I described for years as ‘social anxiety.’ Like… it did cause me anxiety, but there was a cause for it. That counts too, since it’s a form of masking.

Yes! Like, I don’t do the eye contact thing. Well.. I’ve done it when I’m walking past people and don’t want to open up a conversation or anything XD not sure that counts lol

Lolll I think everyone does it then, but eye-contact genuinely doesn’t make or break a diagnosis, contrary to popular belief. My also autistic brother makes eye contact without any issue, like many others, so it’s hardly a hard and fast rule.

An autism trait I’ve always missed completely was ‘inability to play imaginatively’. Even when I was little I’d make up incredibly intricate and extensive stories while playing, and apparently autistic people can’t do that? Again, it’s a spectrum.

I’ve never written an Autistic character before. However, there’s one character I haven’t written yet and I just found out a lot of stuff I was toying with for her is Autism symptoms

Honestly, I can’t encourage you enough to do it if you feel like it XD It could definitely be super interesting to write!

@mamaauthoress Welcome back!  Of course you can!  We’re actually in desperate need of some new plot/action at the moment (I just CAN’T get my characters to do anything,) so that’s perfect!  Would you like a rundown of the characters in the castle right now?

HA! I can so see Kit doing that!! *Ehud would tell Kit he’s pretty it would be hilarious*

              Honestly…has anyone ever told him?

I think Kit would either get smug and annoying about it or tear up XD

Actually it’s pretty much canon that little elderly women tell him he’s handsome and charming because he’s very polite towards them…so they get to see the nice version of him and then Val gets stuck with the smug aftermath XD

I’ve seen my mom wrestle once a month to get her insurance to cover costs for pain medication and I don’t want to be dependent on anything the government can take away on a whim fr.

You know what, that’s honestly a really great point (and I’m so sorry your mom is going through that!)  I guess for me, I’d rather feel productive at least some of the time than never, but that’s a really valid concern (that, plus all of the side effects.)

Actually I have an outstanding GPA and I’m that annoying student ALWAYS answers the teacher’s questions, whether or not I know the right answer which actually gets you a lot of extra brownie points for looking sparkly-eyed and interested.

That was me too!  I remember being told that I had to not answer as much…which didn’t make sense to me because what if I knew the answer and no-one else did?  I also had really good grades, except I remember once in 7th grade I got a D in an English course because I worked really hard on a huge assignment and then forgot to turn it in :’)

while jiggling my leg and looking at the people around me

I HAVE THAT EXACT SAME STIM

And this is how ADHD works I do classes, doodle on my notepad during classes, scroll Pinterest, catch myself, try to make notes, feel like I already know most of this stuff I just need to be attentive for the assignments

Honestly you’re pretty much just describing my whole school experience.  I never realized this was an ADHD thing but it makes sense!

And typically, people with ADHD, ARE super friendly and enthusiastic conversationalists with an unconventional sense of humor and inquisitive puppy eyes that look so earnest everybody’s just like “that person is the soul of honesty and sincerity; their faces would never allow them to lie”

              So…Kit XD

if we vibe well with someone we are going to overshare it’s just inevitable

Yeah…I’ve learned to stop doing that so much as time goes on but I used to have a real issue with that 🙁

Which…IDK this might be oversharing too XD

Oh and the more nervous we are the less inhibitors we have so like you know how tipsy people get more and more free with themselves and less concerned with consequences – well that’s what happens when we get overstimulated we get “high” on happy chemical we’re deficient in but NTs have normally. Which is how I can absolutely sing in front of a large crowd if I’m overstimulated enough but can’t even chat with someone at home if I feel the slightest apprehension (and by “slightest” of course I mean “THEY HATE ME I DON’T’ KNOW WHY BUT THEY HATE ME THE WHOLE STORE HATES ME BECAUSE I STUBBED MY TOE AND DIDN’T YELP IN PAIN SO I MUST BE A SNOB!!!!!!!!!!!”)

That’s really interesting!  When I get really overstimulated, I just shut down completely because of the stress.  It’s even worse when I feel like I have to mask, and I can’t stim to release the stress (like in a lot of social situations.)

Emotions are INTENSE or nothing at all. There is no in between.

              Y e p :’)

Love at first sight? That would be ADHD “I recognize your vibes I love your vibes and now I am high on fuzzies, overstimmed whenever I’m around you and feel the need to get your attention constantly and make you feel fuzzies-high so you’ll reciprocate the slightest measure of affection that’ll instantly shoot us off to the moon with warm fuzzies.” ADHD bonding tends to look like SUPER INTENSE hovering around you/trying to see how much you’ll endure our presence and trying to adapt our behavior to that and constantly trying to do something to keep us on your mind because our brains work like – completely forget everything exists – so we’d be like “If I don’t bond every time we meet until we have a genuine connection they’ll completely forget we ever existed” In a fairly healthy ADHD relationship, this means ADHDer will be intensely sensitive to all your interests and needs and test for boundaries constantly and be VERY responsive to any boundary communicated (although we might forget and stammer apologies the first ten times or so) and will also share a lot of feelings and sensations immediately on their mind, and over time become comfortable/”safe” enough with friend to develop a much deeper connection with a lot less anxiety and clinginess.

This makes perfect sense for Kit!  I’ve known for a while that Val is most certainly a huge hyperfixation for him, but I wasn’t really sure how to portray that without making him seem creepy and obsessive or making the situation unfair to either of them.  This is a fantastic explanation, and I’ll definitely keep this in mind while writing that dynamic!

Buuuuut, ADHD people are especially prone to getting into abusive relationships and here’s why; Boundaries don’t entirely make sense at first, and we often don’t respect our own boundaries. An ADHDer can very easily be so overwhelmed with warm fuzzies that they’ll completely forget their own boundaries and just go along with whatever person-they-want-to-be-friends with says until they stop being so overstimulated and think “what did I just get myself into I need to say no next time but I didn’t establish that boundary and I don’t know ‘socially acceptable’ boundaries are coz I’m always accidentally crossing personal/social boundaries.” And then as I said before – brain forgets anything outside of hyperfixation while hyperfixation lasts – so if the other person does the normal emotional manipulation thing and comes back, apologizes and makes us feel good and like this was a bonding thing, ADHDer are more likely to get hooked on the ups and downs of emotions like a stimuli-junkie. Plus not having a good reference/grasp on what a healthy relationship is supposed to look like is fairly common with ADHDers too.

Yeah, this has happened to me too.  I’m not sure how much of it is ADHD and how much of it is the whole “autistic missing social cues” thing, though.  For me, this usually tended to look like being the “backup friend.”  As I’ve grown and matured (and as God provided me with good, solid Christian friends,) I’ve started making conscious efforts to recognize this behavior and not give in to the emotional pressure to stay.  Personally, consciously recognizing what’s happening makes it a lot easier for me to make the rational decision!

REJECTION SENSITIVITY!!!!!!!!!! ADHDers have INTENSE EMOTIONS and read subtext with such a nuance and sensitivity that we get completely overwhelmed and freak out. If someone looks at us too long we be like “THE WHOLE STORE HATES ME THEY HATE ME!!!!!!!!”

I never realized this was an ADHD thing until this year!  It really makes sense, but it’s kind of embarrassing ngl.  It’s really good to know that there’s other people who have the same issue, because it makes it feel way less isolating

Or that time you were talking about “running away” (surely we all had that phase, right??) but just for fun but your friend was younger than you and actually believed it…Or when you give overly-specific examples that make people a little concerned…😉

Idk if this is an ADHD thing, but I tend to use hyperboles and I keep forgetting that not everyone thinks that way, and they might actually believe the literal words (which wasn’t what I intended because I thought they would understand what I meant.)

Also speaking of masking, I noticed that I often sound way more “ADHD” when I reply to your posts on SE, and I’m assuming it’s related XD

We do not “get” the concept of “it takes a moment to get from one room to another and back again so yes we will walk away while you’re talking genuinely thinking that the sound waves will travel with you and you’ll be back in a split-second before the other person has said another word. Orrrr replying to a text from Rose on Pinterest at the same time Mom is telling you how to cook the spicy chicken casserole thinking it’ll take such a split split second you won’t miss a word and then “…so start at 3:15.” And you’re like 0.0; “sooo I prehead the oven at 3.15?” very blankly and she sighs and rolls her eyes.

Oh my my goodness YES!!!  I have such a horrible issue with time – I tend to be late because I always assume I have way more time than I actually do, and I always underestimate the time it takes to get ready to go ;’)

Thank you so much for taking the time to type this all up!  It’s really helpful, plus it’s interesting seeing how many of the symptoms I have, and how they interact with the autistic traits I have XD

And don’t worry about the post!  I mean, thanks for blacking it out, but also I totally understand forgetting and accidentally overlooking it XD

Ah, yes, social anxiety. So it is possible to “slip into it”? Hm..

Interesting. I wouldn’t say I wasn’t able to, but I sucked at coming up with stories when I was younger. Even just playing dolls, I wanted @e-n-leonard there to help me come up with a story thing. So when she told me “just make up it up on your own, I’m busy.” I was just like😒 XD

And here’s a description of the character I have in here right now:

                    Mara Gobey-Hanad

Appearance: About 5 feet 7 inches / 1.7 meters; dark brown skin, hair, and eyes; oval face; wears hair in cornrows with the ends dyed pink; strong and (publically) proud of bearing; wears the same all black clothes as everyone in Benevola.

Personality: Competitive, musical, intense sense of honor, respects authority, perfectionist, diligent, proud, deep love for her little brother. Honestly a more tender person than Jade, which is rather odd since Mara is a sort of antagonist.

                    @calidris

                      @mamaauthoress Here’s a description of my characters!

Valencia Page: 5’3″, pale skin, dark curly hair cut in a bob.

Val is quiet and introverted, as well as intelligent and observant.  She’s autistic, and has always struggled to make and keep friends.  She was close friends with one of Kit’s biological cousins as a child, but they were separated after family issues led to Val staying with someone else.  She’s never had a solid friendship since, and has instead found herself constantly being used in half-hearted, one sided friendships.  Between this and witnessing her parents’ marriage break down, she’s become rather cynical about relationships in general.  I think she’s really just terrified of having her heart broken again tbh 🙁

Christopher “Kit” Goldenseal: 6’0″, East Asian, tan skin, black hair styled/dyed bubblegum pink (!) with an undercut.  Kit’s extremely social and extroverted, as well as spectacularly flamboyant.  He’s got ADHD, so he tends to be both dramatic/emotionally expressive and extremely impulsive.  He’s also my most obnoxious character yet, but I think most of that’s just his personality

Kit is bisexual, but he’s absolutely committed to following Biblical morals.  He was ostracized after a friend he confided in broke his trust (Val witnessed the repercussions of this.)  Like Val, a lot of his arc revolves around healing from social trauma, as well as finding people who will love him unconditionally and support his strong moral code.

Kit was adopted into the Goldenseal family after his parents died in an accident, and was later orphaned a second time when his adoptive parents died as well (leaving him and his brothers under the care of the eldest son, Eli.)  While he dearly loves his brothers, he’s always been curious about his biological family, and started reaching out to connect with his cousins after he was ostracized.

The story kicks off when one of his female cousins (Val’s childhood friend) disappears without a trace.  Kit enlists her help, knowing that they were once close, and the two conduct a series of interviews with people who knew her to try and learn more about the events leading up to her disappearance.  The two clash spectacularly at first, but gradually come to lean on each other as their work brings to light compatibilities in both their brains and worldviews.  These interviews will force them into increasingly uncomfortable (and even dangerous) situations, as well as force them to confront painful memories of rejection in their own pasts (many of the people they’re interviewing were knowingly or unknowingly involved.)

Kit also has a giant crush on Val that is at least partially born out of an ADHD fueled hyperfixation – which is rather cute at times but also very awkward and sometimes annoying.  He’s the one who first started calling her “Val,” which I think is adorable ;’)

Oh and @everyone I think I’m going to take out Basil 🙁  He just doesn’t have anything to contribute to Spire anymore, and so I’m considering saving him for another story.  For now, I think I’ll add in Kit’s brother Julian!  He and Basil have a similar dynamic with Kit, except Julian is actually one of the few rational people in the story XD

So as I’ve mentioned before, we’ve tackled some touchy subjects in here (Kit’s same sex attraction, one character with physical/sexual abuse in her past, suicide.)  Nothing touchy actually happens in the castle, but it does pop up in backstories sometimes.  We’re using content warnings for potentially disturbing or uncomfortable posts, and just to be on the safe side we’ve been pretty conservative with them – anything from described violence, to blanked out swearing, to abuse, etc.  Feel free to use them as you see fit!  We’re taking a cautious approach here, so it won’t be seen as too sensitive or odd 🙂

                        Yeahhh… ❤️

Oik yeah, and anyway I’m still quite functional, it’s society’s problem if they want me to be productive more conventionally 😉

LOL I got that one all the time too!!! Although I do get why they do that otherwise everyone just kinda waits for the “star students” to answer even if they know the answer because they feel insecure about talking so I get that.

I’m verrrry lucky to only have a end-of-semester deadline – everything else CAN be postponed and my professor’s really forgiving about late assignments…

I HAVE THAT EXACT SAME STIM

IT JUST FEELS SO GOOD RIGHT!?!?!!?!?!

Honestly you’re pretty much just describing my whole school experience.  I never realized this was an ADHD thing but it makes sense!

Oh yeah! And I’ll never know how I’ve stayed on top of it because I know I’ve not been “paying attention” like everybody else at all.

                        So…Kit XD

                        Y E S

Yeah…I’ve learned to stop doing that so much as time goes on but I used to have a real issue with that 🙁 Which…IDK this might be oversharing too XD

*looks around, shrugs like “I-guess-I’ll-die-meme* Idk.

Not to brag or anything but I wouldn’t know if I was oversharing if I told a complete stranger my entire life story 😅✌️

That’s really interesting!  When I get really overstimulated, I just shut down completely because of the stress.  It’s even worse when I feel like I have to mask, and I can’t stim to release the stress (like in a lot of social situations.)

I mean if I get overstimmed AND upset I completely shut down. But only overstimmed and I am HIGHHH.

*Possibly why I had the mental composure to actually say ‘This is why you don’t do drugs kids.’ while drugged after having my wisdoms pulled. I was/am stupidly proud of that quip.*

Well in the castle it’s been cute, I think as long as he TRIES to respect her boundaries it’s good. Never underestimate the power of puppy eyes.

                        Sameee

I never realized this was an ADHD thing until this year!  It really makes sense, but it’s kind of embarrassing ngl.  It’s really good to know that there’s other people who have the same issue, because it makes it feel way less isolating

Yes, exactly! If you’re the only one who has this issue it’s so isolating and awful it feels like no one can help you or connect or know you and it feels like you have to settle for more shallow friendships.

It’s really really great to know other people have the same struggles.

Idk if this is an ADHD thing, but I tend to use hyperboles and I keep forgetting that not everyone thinks that way, and they might actually believe the literal words (which wasn’t what I intended because I thought they would understand what I meant.) Also speaking of masking, I noticed that I often sound way more “ADHD” when I reply to your posts on SE, and I’m assuming it’s related XD

                        Ugh yessssssss!!!

I really often “shift” depending on who I’m talking to but it’s also genuine I think but it’s also so different and I’m so used to masking I don’t know what’s the mask and what’s me…

Oh my my goodness YES!!!  I have such a horrible issue with time – I tend to be late because I always assume I have way more time than I actually do, and I always underestimate the time it takes to get ready to go ;’) Thank you so much for taking the time to type this all up!  It’s really helpful, plus it’s interesting seeing how many of the symptoms I have, and how they interact with the autistic traits I have XD And don’t worry about the post!  I mean, thanks for blacking it out, but also I totally understand forgetting and accidentally overlooking it XD

                        Yessssssssssss lol time stinks!!!

Absolutely I got to rant about my hyperfixation!

Lol but thanks for flagging it anyway!

Oh uh, my character’s Ehud, he’s ADHD and a kleptomaniac and he’s also super super sweet and loves pink!

To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.

                          @everyone

If y’all want to finish the battle with Lord Castle first, I might wait to drop in Frey until after you’re finished. Frey is from a contemporary story and he’s also disabled, so it would end up with him on the sidelines, probably eating popcorn and giving snarky commentary, with not much character development involved XD So, I can drop him in after that!

Without darkness, there is no light. If there was no nighttime, would the stars be as bright?

She loves to entangle herself in psychological mysteries and figure out the inner workings on the human mind, because she loves playing around with people. Some might call her manipulative, but it’s mostly her drive to know how people work. Her MBTI type is ENTP as of right now.

                                Let’s try this again

                                NAME: Calix Meir
                                GENDER: Male
                                AGE: 18

                                EYES: Silver
BUILD: broad in the shoulders but a lanky everywhere else (late bloomer, heh), about 5’9″
                                FACECLAIM: https://pin.it/7iNIQha
NOTES: Calix is warmer, friendlier than his older sister, and much more shy, too. He’s unassuming but quite opinionated on certain things, if asked. He will stand by his beliefs, and is a steadfast anchor to those he knows. He’s currently IXFP as of now.

                                _________

Now a little bit about star magic and fire magic. Only the race of Incendu-Vespere, which means “flame star” in the ancient language, can manipulate and control the lifeblood of the universe.
Star magic is the structure of the universe. It runs through the very lifeblood of the world as we know it, and those Incendu-Vespere who are able to master it well are usually very clever and calculating. Star magic includes being able to manipulate light, ice, and water, as well as open portals to other places on the world.
Fire magic is a bit different; it is also part of the lifeblood of the world, but it is warm, bringing life to the world while balancing out the cold of star magic. It’s what makes the world turn since when heat and cold mix, they funnel — thus why the world rotates. Those who are more proficient in fire magic are normally warm and friendly Incendu-Vespere.
Now, sun magic is unique. Sun magic is a mix of both fire and star magic, and it can only be wielded by Incendu-Vespere with extreme ability. Eve and Calix are part of this minority, but they are still just learning how to balance out their abilities, since Eve prefers star magic, and Calix fire magic. Those who wield the ability to manipulate sun magic are either corrupt or holy, and the Meirs have yet to fall into one of these categories.

those characters sound interesting!  Are they related to Ruan’s story by any chance?

                                  @ethan-leonard
Would you like to go ahead and have Saevus finish off Lord Castle?  I don’t think the vulture vomit idea is going to work out, since @jared-williams isn’t active right now

Actually @everyone I have an idea!

I think that in order to get to the next stage or room of the castle, each character has to pass through a gate or entrance guarded by their “timeskip” or future self.  So, if Saevus beats Lord Castle, then this could be a surprise challenge they have to face in order to get their reward.  If Saevus loses to Lord Castle, then it could be a punishment!

                                  *laughs as one fey*
