@rose-colored-fancy @calidris @lady-grace
If it helps, @calidris once gave me some great advice when I was doubting Aydin. She told me to imagine if they had grown up in completely normal circumstances. Would they still have those traits? For Aydin, that was a resounding yes.
Hmm, that’s interesting advice. I’ll try it on Ríadnu. Thanks!
Oh that’s SUCH a cool job! And goodness, I totally relate to that, once my accent in Dutch was described as ‘either British or Eastern European’ which… completely wrong in hilarious ways XD
Yes, I’ve enjoyed it a lot, and I partially got it to force me to practice interactions with people.
Oh wow, that’s hilarious! And all those accents are so different.
😂 Today I did a photo shoot of a sweet little Asian lady, who asked if I was Ukrainian (nope). According to her, I apparently have a Ukrainian doppelgänger who is the daughter of her friend. Probably didn’t help that my accent went wonky again today XD.Oh Jade looks COOL! I love how you did that! I love the shading on her blouse especially!
Oh cool! It looks so much like her, especially the expression – she looks really cold and resolved, but there’s still a softness about her (like she’s hiding it)
Thank you both! That’s the first time I’ve done anything like that with fabric, and I’m glad her personality shows a bit. 🙂 There we go; not standing on its head XD
*skips into room cause I heard there were drawings* —
Huh. So that has a name. *remembers the times I’ve panicked and practiced in my brain before phone calls even to simple, mundane restaurants *
Wait.. that ain’t normal? *reads through everything* hmm… *goes to looks up symptoms* Wait a minute… I’ve wondered if @e-n-leonard was “neurosparkly” (awesome smash btw) but me? Nevereerrr
which seems to be a reoccurring theme here so that argument is invalidXD Anyway, um… somehow a couple of my characters have two or so symptoms I didn’t even realize are autism symptoms (one of which Emma suggested) and I recognized some as things I do. … I’m not sure what to think other than “Extra SPARKLES??” XD … nice drawings! *backs out of room awkwardly*Really? 😂 And we always thought you were the normal one! *dumps extra sparkles on your head*
Kit: “Looking for anything in particular? Or are you just here to see me ;)”
Oh my. That’s the kind of comment that could earn a Glare of Death, followed by avoidance. Poor Val.
We are called to be lights in the cosmos.
May your inkwells never run dry!September 19, 2022 at 5:09 am #152946…
I did?
Ok it sounds vaguely familiar but I’d forgotten all about that XD
Yes honey you absolutely did and it was honestly such brilliant advice that it stuck with me XD
Wait.. that ain’t normal?
*reads through everything* hmm… *goes to looks up symptoms* Wait a minute… I’ve wondered if e-n-leonard was “neurosparkly” (awesome smash btw) but me? Nevereerrr which seems to be a reoccurring theme here so that argument is invalid XDOkay, I’ve seen it explained this way! Autistic people have a lot of traits that NT’s relate to, or experience as well, it’s the degree of the traits and putting all of them together that means you’re Autistic! I once saw it explained as “okay all people bump their heads on doorframes sometimes, but it happens more to tall people. If you’re tall you’ll experience it more than a person of average height, but they might get it too! If you bump your head on a doorframe it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re tall”
Buuuttt as Calidris said, Neurodivergence runs in families, and also, every ND person is wildly different!
Like often when I’m researching I’ll stumble across an Autism trait I don’t relate to at all and instantly the overwhelming self-doubt hits me like a wave. But, you’re not trying to fill out a perfect checklist, you’re looking for patterns that match!
Also, a hard thing with figuring it out is that it isn’t something that’s usually discussed by NTs! So you either think “I’m the only person who has ever experienced this, I’m just weird” or “Everyone does this” because it’s hard to compare!
And as Calidris said, it could be even harder if multiple people in your family are kind of spectrum-y because it was completely normal. For example, my older brother is also autistic and I think a LOT of my traits were missed because autistic was basically the baseline!
Also, you always see the same kinds of presentation in media, so that’s one reason I spent so long thinking I couldn’t possibly be Autistic. So, you’ll only see the kind that are (for example) noticeably awkward in conversations, don’t understand metaphors, never make anything resembling eye contact, and stim in very specific ways.
So often when you’re researching and thinking about it you’ll figure out ‘w a i t not all people do ‘eye contact’ by looking vaguely at someone’s face instead of their eyes??’ And stuff like that! Also the constantly repeating experience of “Wait that was The Autism all along??”
Researching and looking into it, if that’s something you want to do, has never hurt anyone! Also, writing an autistic character is what made me really figure it out, so if it’s something you feel like exploring that’s always a fun way to do it!
Yes, I’ve enjoyed it a lot, and I partially got it to force me to practice interactions with people.
Lolll such a mood, I do that all the time XD Interactions scare me but if I can anticipate it and practice beforehand I can fake neurotypicalism quite beautifully XD
Today I did a photo shoot of a sweet little Asian lady, who asked if I was Ukrainian (nope). According to her, I apparently have a Ukrainian doppelgänger who is the daughter of her friend. Probably didn’t help that my accent went wonky again today XD.
Oh that’s so cool! It sounds like a super fun job!

@everyone but especially @lady-grace
Happy Hobbit Day!

HAPPY HOBBIT DAY!!A long-hidden tale may hold the answers-and the healing-they so desperately seek.
~Set the Stars AlightSeptember 23, 2022 at 11:06 am #152977@lady-grace fun fact: ADHD and autism both run in families! So if you have an autistic family member, there’s a pretty good chance you could be as well…
Quite possible😂
Also, Rose and I have noticed that even if our family members aren’t actually autistic, they sometimes still have a few of our symptoms or quirks. So, I think in some cases, things can seem perfectly normal to us because everyone in our families does them too XD
I’d been wondering if that happens. Interesting🤔
Okay, I’ve seen it explained this way! Autistic people have a lot of traits that NT’s relate to, or experience as well, it’s the degree of the traits and putting all of them together that means you’re Autistic! Ok, interesting
I feel like that’s all I’m saying XDSo at what point does someone know they’re Autistic? Like, how many traits?Like often when I’m researching I’ll stumble across an Autism trait I don’t relate to at all and instantly the overwhelming self-doubt hits me like a wave.
👍
Yeah, I’ve honestly never discussed it before, although I have thought about it a few times. And as Calidris said, it could be even harder if multiple people in your family are kind of spectrum-y because it was completely normal. For example, my older brother is also autistic and I think a LOT of my traits were missed because autistic was basically the baseline!
*nods* That makes sense
Also, you always see the same kinds of presentation in media, so that’s one reason I spent so long thinking I couldn’t possibly be Autistic. So, you’ll only see the kind that are (for example) noticeably awkward in conversations, don’t understand metaphors, never make anything resembling eye contact, and stim in very specific ways.

Yes! Like, I don’t do the eye contact thing. Well.. I’ve done it when I’m walking past people and don’t want to open up a conversation or anything XD
not sure that counts lolResearching and looking into it, if that’s something you want to do, has never hurt anyone! Also, writing an autistic character is what made me really figure it out, so if it’s something you feel like exploring that’s always a fun way to do it!
I’ve never written an Autistic character before. However, there’s one character I haven’t written yet and I just found out a lot of stuff I was toying with for her is Autism symptoms😂
Really? 😂 And we always thought you were the normal one! *dumps extra sparkles on your head*
*chokes on sparkles* Mhm *rubs glitter out of my eyes*

~Set the Stars AlightSeptember 28, 2022 at 8:08 am #153010I AM VERRRRY LATEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah! I was pretty young at the time – I actually can’t remember why my parents got me tested but it’s probably because I was having trouble concentrating at school.
HAHA yes coz you have to fail at school to get a real diagnosis…
But yeah, that’s cool!
Hans Asperger was an Austrian scientist who collaborated with the Nazis and sent a lot of disabled/autistic children to their deaths (the Nazis were trying to eradicate disabled people, and obviously they weren’t going to spare kids)
Oh. That explains why they stopped using that name.
Thaaaat makes sense yeah.
SAME ok so when I was younger I was “undiagnosed” with Asperger’s because the psychiatrist probably wasn’t very knowledgeable about autism in girls (honestly a concerning amount of them aren’t.) Obviously it was a doctors appointment of sorts and I felt very uncomfortable, so I was masking extra hard…so he just thought I wasn’t very autistic. For a while I wanted to get re-diagnosed, but I heard a lot of stories about autistic women who were basically gaslighted and ignored by psychiatrists, or even diagnosed with personality disorders instead, so I think I won’t try and pursue that. Also during Covid there were states that basically issued protocols de-prioritizing disabled people in the case of limited medical resources. Like, if I had a diagnosis it could actually be used to discriminate against me! I could (theoretically) lose my life because some people believe that I’m less worthy of life because I’m autistic. And lets not even get started on the fact that a lot of people want to screen for autism in the womb so they can abort autistic babies 🙁 Also just the stereotyping? The fact that a lot of people actually believe that autistic people don’t have emotions (some of us feel SO deeply,) or that media just portrays us as vaguely “weird” without actually exploring why we’re different and all the different aspects of that (and how some of this really is subjective.) Also not all autistic people are weird? Like, I know this obviously isn’t the case with all autistic people, but I actually have really good social skills! This isn’t to say that I’m better than anyone, but it is a (sometimes valid) stereotype and it needs to be addressed and handled better. Idk, I just think a lot of people don’t realize how real ableism is, and how it really is a legitimate form of discrimination that’s very socially acceptable right now. It’s also one reason why I think my neurodivergent characters are so important to me. It’s not something I originally meant to include, but it just grew organically because I kind of share parts of myself with them and those parts of myself happen to be neurodivergent XD Tbh I think it’s also a way of exploring some of the painful parts of my past that I’ve experienced because of this while – especially with Val in particular, I just poured a lot of that pain into her and it’s honestly given me a great way to address that and work through that hurt. It’s been very therapeutic ngl.
GWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YESSSSSS GIRL THE ABLISM THE SEXISM THE GASLIGHTING AND THE OUTRIGHT ABUSE RAMPANT IN ANY NEURODIVERSITY DIAGNOSIS IS JUST…UGH!!
No yeah that’s why a lot of queer people are pro-life too and the screening isn’t even accurate!
Don’t get me started on stereotyping! I can’t even -!
But also, I just get so much joy out of the fact that all of my neurodivergent characters are so, so PRETTY like they could all be models and it makes me so happy :’) I actually did have a supremely horrible idea (realization?) that one day Kit will model for something and there’s absolutely nothing I can do to stop him… Also autistic characters are always portrayed as so unappealing and frumpy, and it’s sad because we can be attractive too? And it’s SUCH a prevalent stereotype. In a lot of ways I guess I’m fortunate because I really don’t fit the stereotype in that sense, like I’m good at masking and I’m pretty, so I think to a lot of people I come across as “normal,” and I get treated pretty well. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced blatant discrimination, so I’m really blessed in that sense. Also no one tell Kit I said he’s pretty, he’ll never let me live it down XD
Oh yesss!!!! I mean WHY DO PEOPLE THING NEURODIVERSE ARE NOT TWICE AS GORGEOUS HONESTLY!!?!?!
HA! I can so see Kit doing that!!
*Ehud would tell Kit he’s pretty it would be hilarious*
I’m glad you’ve found a system that works well for you! Personally, I really want to go back on meds because I could actually focus and read, but we’ll see! Also judging by your posts I’m guessing you’re WAY more hyperactive than I am, so idk if meds would do anything for you because I don’t have that experience, and honestly if you’re thriving without them then you obviously don’t need to be taking them!
Yeahhhhh when I’m having a sensory day I sometimes wonder if I don’t need some sort of medication or therapy but I’ve seen my mom wrestle once a month to get her insurance to cover costs for pain medication and I don’t want to be dependent on anything the government can take away on a whim fr.
To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
September 28, 2022 at 8:09 am #153011ALSO ALSO ALSO if you have tips on writing ADHD characters I’d love to hear more about your experience! I feel like Kit’s experience is probably closer to yours than mine, so if you have anything you’d like to share by all means feel free to do so!
*cracks knuckles*
PREPARE FOR A NEEDLESSLY LONG RANT ON ADHD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. We don’t all fail classes and struggle to keep our grades up!!
Actually I have an outstanding GPA and I’m that annoying student ALWAYS answers the teacher’s questions, whether or not I know the right answer which actually gets you a lot of extra brownie points for looking sparkly-eyed and interested. Which…doesn’t mean I’m actually interested, it just means I’m under-stimulated and have learned to cope by looking intelligent and nodding my head whenever the teacher looks at me, while jiggling my leg and looking at the people around me including the other ADHD girl beside me who was really excited about Hello Kitty and played Sonic before class and left her screen angled so I can look over her shoulder and watch her play games.
She got so bored she actually put earplugs in and bebopped to her own music behind the large computer screen after trying to doze off, she only pulled them out when I started writing notes again, then she flipped back to super attentive student.
And this is how ADHD works I do classes, doodle on my notepad during classes, scroll Pinterest, catch myself, try to make notes, feel like I already know most of this stuff I just need to be attentive for the assignments and blurt out answers and present work for critique to get the extra brownie points that make my professor feel like I’m “a pleasure to teach”.
Oh ADHD works is … right now I’m mentally describing everyone in the classroom yesterday because I used that as an example and I want to walk through it 10 times to “file” the information and all the feelings and sensations and emotions and things I wish I had observed more attentively and at the same time I just remembered I wanted to listen to Sonic video game music coz I just found that song yesterday too.
But anyway, ADHD doesn’t mean I fail grades; I am very inattentive but I can still prioritize and break down my work…sorta…I can make a good enough impression on my teachers to get away with a lot of small errors as long as I know the basics! It can make people fail grades esp if the how you work problems is very rigid. But being ADHD doesn’t automatically mean you constantly fail tests.
It tends to mean instead…

To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
September 28, 2022 at 8:12 am #153013Our brains just…kinda work like Sherlock Holmes not Dr Watson. I actually commented on this pin on pinterest with another theory and other people posted their theories in reply too!!!!
And on that topic!
2. We actually can have good grades AND be social people!
I’m actually super friendly and a decent conversationalist!
And typically, people with ADHD, ARE super friendly and enthusiastic conversationalists with an unconventional sense of humor and inquisitive puppy eyes that look so earnest everybody’s just like “that person is the soul of honesty and sincerity; their faces would never allow them to lie”
The thing is, we “get” social cues really well but we get very overwhelmed with them too which tends to make us look awkward and funny in an endearing sort of way.
I have NEVER seen an ADHD person who wasn’t super expressive and naturally friendly. We’re REALLY stimuli/situationally responsive too, you will probably CONSTANTLY see our behavior/attitudes shift just slightly every millisecond and our eyes will be so intense as we re-eval everything every step of the way.
And we’ll talk to ANYBODY – even the introverted ADHDs, the introverted ones will be super quiet until they get curious or nervous and then they’ll blurt out stuff or respond really bluntly in a way that’ll make people laugh.
Like last class I was in person for the ADHD girl I just met just started chatting happily with me like we were besties and on that topic if we vibe well with someone we are going to overshare it’s just inevitable and she was cool I think she said she had schizophrenia I gotta ask her about that next time we see each other so I can get some writing advice for writing schizophrenia!
Which leads me too!!!
3. We’re too curious to be racist
Seriously, if you kidnapped me and brought me to a gang leader who wanted to chop off my fingers I’d probably interview him…and chatter nonstop because I’m a nervous talker.
That’s just…the ADHD first response; Some different = something interesting.
Oh and the more nervous we are the less inhibitors we have so like you know how tipsy people get more and more free with themselves and less concerned with consequences – well that’s what happens when we get overstimulated we get “high” on happy chemical we’re deficient in but NTs have normally.
Which is how I can absolutely sing in front of a large crowd if I’m overstimulated enough but can’t even chat with someone at home if I feel the slightest apprehension (and by “slightest” of course I mean “THEY HATE ME I DON’T’ KNOW WHY BUT THEY HATE ME THE WHOLE STORE HATES ME BECAUSE I STUBBED MY TOE AND DIDN’T YELP IN PAIN SO I MUST BE A SNOB!!!!!!!!!!!”)
To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
September 28, 2022 at 8:15 am #1530144. Emotions are INTENSE or nothing at all. There is no in between.
Love at first sight? That would be ADHD “I recognize your vibes I love your vibes and now I am high on fuzzies, overstimmed whenever I’m around you and feel the need to get your attention constantly and make you feel fuzzies-high so you’ll reciprocate the slightest measure of affection that’ll instantly shoot us off to the moon with warm fuzzies.”
ADHD bonding tends to look like SUPER INTENSE hovering around you/trying to see how much you’ll endure our presence and trying to adapt our behavior to that and constantly trying to do something to keep us on your mind because our brains work like – completely forget everything exists – so we’d be like “If I don’t bond every time we meet until we have a genuine connection they’ll completely forget we ever existed”
In a fairly healthy ADHD relationship, this means ADHDer will be intensely sensitive to all your interests and needs and test for boundaries constantly and be VERY responsive to any boundary communicated (although we might forget and stammer apologies the first ten times or so) and will also share a lot of feelings and sensations immediately on their mind, and over time become comfortable/”safe” enough with friend to develop a much deeper connection with a lot less anxiety and clinginess.
Buuuuut, ADHD people are especially prone to getting into abusive relationships and here’s why;
Boundaries don’t entirely make sense at first, and we often don’t respect our own boundaries. An ADHDer can very easily be so overwhelmed with warm fuzzies that they’ll completely forget their own boundaries and just go along with whatever person-they-want-to-be-friends with says until they stop being so overstimulated and think “what did I just get myself into I need to say no next time but I didn’t establish that boundary and I don’t know ‘socially acceptable’ boundaries are coz I’m always accidentally crossing personal/social boundaries.”
And then as I said before – brain forgets anything outside of hyperfixation while hyperfixation lasts – so if the other person does the normal emotional manipulation thing and comes back, apologizes and makes us feel good and like this was a bonding thing, ADHDer are more likely to get hooked on the ups and downs of emotions like a stimuli-junkie. Plus not having a good reference/grasp on what a healthy relationship is supposed to look like is fairly common with ADHDers too.
And oversharing! As I said ADHDers will vibe with someone and this means they will instantly trust that person totally and completely unless consciously slowing things down which means they’re pretty likely to overshare before a good connection/relationship has been established and thus screw themselves.
5. Eyecontact is funky; if once we look you in the eye we physically cannot look away until the other person does; we freeze like we’re hypnotized.
This gives us very wide expressive eyes that tell people we’re listening even when we aren’t, and makes us look ages younger than we actually are, I swear the whole class has decided I’m the youngest in class even though half my classmates are exactly my age.
6. REJECTION SENSITIVITY!!!!!!!!!!
ADHDers have INTENSE EMOTIONS and read subtext with such a nuance and sensitivity that we get completely overwhelmed and freak out. If someone looks at us too long we be like “THE WHOLE STORE HATES ME THEY HATE ME!!!!!!!!”
If you start talking to someone with ADHD you’ll typically see them twitch every couple seconds – re-evalling every emotional subtext and social cues you’re giving them with the every millisecond thought that if they do something wrong AGAIN you’re going to get impatient with them and hate them and never trust them/think they’re silly.
You will get very strong puppy vibes from us the more nervous we are; ya’know the puppy vibes with that puppy who wants so much to do whatever you’re trying to tell them to do but they’re just too dang excited and can’t sit still and pay attention?
I have never seen an ADHD person who wasn’t INTENSELY friendly if given the chance to be.
At some point most ADHD people reach the realization that every slight emotional shift and every “sudden” burst of anger (read we’re too overwhelmed to pick up most of the build up in that moment), that all that isn’t actually reflective of their behavior but actually what the other person is going through and their attitude. At which point, ADHDers are…confused, sense the emotions and the reasons behind them and just like…”ok…” non-judgmentally psycho-analyze and move on to “how do I support the people I love having emotions?” and *accepts strangers/acquaintances and people they didn’t vibe with having these emotions and learning how to navigate that without sponging their emotions*
Once an ADHDer matures a little and becomes more self-confident, they tend to have vividly accurate intuitions and dangle between blunt and sensitive to others, very accepting of other people’s emotions but with a kind of innocence like “this is wrong and irrational but I get wrong and irrational too so I guess this is what we’re doing now…”
To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
September 28, 2022 at 8:16 am #1530157. Masking
Ok this might be an obscure example but if anybody’s seen Leverage, ya know the grifter

She aspires to acting but literally cannot act except over-the-top drama-queen staging unless she is pulling off a heist/swindle. It’s hilarious because she’s a fantastic actor but only in heat of the moment fool a bunch of corrupt corporate criminals that she’s the ambassador of a company in Nigeria that’ll buy their planes so she can frame them for taking bribes after they let patients die by not providing insurance.
This is how masking works for ADHDers. We are fantastic actors!! Whennn it comes to providing random strangers the impressions we want them to get and don’t expect to meet them very often after that.
This means we can sound and act very intelligent but only for a certain period of time. It’s not that we aren’t intelligent and mature, but we’re really clumsy too and we think in such a different way that basic things are difficult to us and complex things are easy!
For instance, when Mom asks me to get something for her it’s total and un-abatable inner panic, and I end up getting the wrong thing and sounding really stupid but conversely when I went to review my resume with a professional (free service provided by my school) she was absolutely aglow with how articulate and intelligent I sounded. And it’s really confusing and hard to figure out what is a mask and what is not because I am both!! I am intelligent and focused and I am ditzy and flighty, it confuses everyone too, I’m always getting comments like “I thought she was so sweet and reserved until ______ and she’s both and I can’t reconcile”
And this is one of the biggest coping mechanisms ADHD people roll with when they just can’t figure out those very basic instructions you’re giving: act like you’re joking when you ask for clarification. Pretend you’re teasing them, laugh when they make fun of you for playing dumb because you want to be helpful and you want to do what they’re asking but you know if you ask for more clarification on how to do the most basic activities like grabbing a “black case out of the closet” (THERE WERE TWO BLACK CASES BY THE WAY IT WAS NOT MY FAULT!?!?!?) then people will get frustrated and not think you capable and not trust you anymore.
So it’s just easier to pretend you were trying to make them laugh than to having to tell them you’re stupid which is the only thing they’ll hear if you ask for more clarification.
It’s also very hard to STOP masking because we are really good mimics as a rule and have such vivid imaginations it’s hard to discern what parts of you are authentic and what’s just part of the mask.
To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
September 28, 2022 at 8:17 am #1530168. Accidental Charisma/Accidental Lying
As I said we have really vivid imaginations so when we get fired up about something we envision it SO CLEARLY that if you were to hear us talking about it you would think we’re already seen it and watch its progress.
Which makes our enthusiasm super contagious and gets a band of followers behind us…very unconsciously. And of course if you imagine something so clearly and are so hyped about it, well when the actual thing isn’t as good/as doable/doesn’t even exist…that might get you accused of lying. Or thinking you’re just encouraging people but then they start going to you instead of the actual authority in place…Or that time you were talking about “running away” (surely we all had that phase, right??) but just for fun but your friend was younger than you and actually believed it…Or when you give overly-specific examples that make people a little concerned…😉
9. Time does not exist
We do not “get” the concept of “it takes a moment to get from one room to another and back again so yes we will walk away while you’re talking genuinely thinking that the sound waves will travel with you and you’ll be back in a split-second before the other person has said another word.
Orrrr replying to a text from Rose on Pinterest at the same time Mom is telling you how to cook the spicy chicken casserole thinking it’ll take such a split split second you won’t miss a word and then “…so start at 3:15.” And you’re like 0.0; “sooo I prehead the oven at 3.15?” very blankly and she sighs and rolls her eyes.
But that was still WAYYYYYY BETTER than the time I asked threw the door open to ask Mom a question while she was outside and she answered it and she was still talking but I forgot she was still talking and I had to go do thing before I forgot and so I slammed the door closed. And then a second later realized what I’d done and swung open the door I swear that is the nearest near-death experience I ever done had!!!!!
I think that’s about it…
To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.
September 28, 2022 at 2:27 pm #153019@this-is-not-an-alien thank you so much! I’m still reading through all of this, but this is super helpful and interesting! I just wanted to let you know though, idk if you noticed but the post you included does have a swear word. It doesn’t bother me as much because I went to public school and that kind of language is EVERYWHERE but I know there’s definitely some people on here who might be more sensitive to that, so I just wanted to let you know!
*laughs as one fey*
