With love interests, I always like to try to make them the most interesting person second to the MC.  If that means developing them for hours or giving them a fascinating backstory or some fatal flaw that keeps getting triggered.  I think love interests with a strong goal+fatal flaw+a sense of humor=amazingness!

I don’t know if this only happens to me, but the hero tends to pull all the other characters into their orbit, so to speak. The narrative almost starts to revolve around them. Have you ever noticed something similar?

Yes!  I know what you mean!  That always happens to me… it’s like “wait, you weren’t supposed to be that important!” XD

For me, I just kinda roll with it, because hero characters are fun and they just deserve the spotlight, right?

(Also, a lot of my hero characters *cough* love interests *cough* end up changing from bad to good and then they display all that good heroism stuff, lol!  But yeah, my love interests make me so happy…  I don’t think there’s ever been one I didn’t like!! XD)

Awesome stuff, Rose!  *ponders deeply for a moment*  I have the hero archetype in the form of a secondary character, Holly.  She has all the struggles of a normal person, but she has the power to deal with it because of her strong morals and courage.

And I totally agree, heroes don’t have to be main characters at all!  Secondary/minor characters are really fun to see the hero archetype in.

            Heyyy,

I write urban fantasy mainly.  My most current WIP is more urban, but something else too… maybe alt. history?  It’s based off of different cultures but has a modern twist (techonology, languages, etc.) if that makes sense.

            Cool topic!

                @obrian-from-the-surface-world, @bclarke

Hey guys!  Thanks for guessing, it was fun to read!! 😉

                1) Name: Tara, Kristin, Sierra

                1) Name: Mia

                Close, her name is Elle.

                2) Age: 17-21

                2) Age: 22

                She’s 19.

                3) Career/Role in Story: MC or MC’s older sister

                3) Career/Role in Story: Hidden friend/supporter of MC who isn’t given as much credit as she deserves. Or maybe an engineer or some kind of ‘fixing’ job.

Bronte’s answer was closer (no offense, Brian, lol).  Because of the island she lives on, she has to basically start over, to the point of working to keep the island running by working outside.  She’s a “netter” (fisherman) and works out on the ocean all day.  She’s a main-er supporting character, frenemy to the MC, Dylan.

4): Personality: A thinker. Pensive and perhaps a little distrusting. She knows more than she is saying.  I see her as strong-willed and determined.  A natural beauty that does not like too much attention, but cannot help being noticed.  Guarded and fiercely protective. Often has to care for the younger or more naïve in her group.  She doesn’t take disrespect and abhors liars. She’s not overly concerned about what others think of her.

4): Personality: Friendly, but can be pushed to fierce.

She’s very outgoing, but she’s a little on the offensive because she’s insecure.  She’s pretty snarky, but brilliant.  She can be very protective and is very loyal once you gain her trust.

                5) Would you be friends with that character?: Yeah. She strikes me as guarded, but probably one of the most intelligent in any room.  She is considered about what she says, never revealing too much about herself until she is certain she can trust them and that has to be earned.

                5) Would you be friends with that character?: If we were ever on the same project together, then probably.

If she’d be friends with you…. jk. 😉  She’ll only be friends with people if she can trust them.

                6) Any other details you may have gotten from picture: She wants to choose who she spends her valuable time with and when she goes or stays, without drama.

                6) Any other details you may have gotten from picture: She looks like she’s thinking about the world – maybe not her place in the world (she knows where she stands), but where everyone else fits.

Well, she kinda makes drama, to be honest.  She’s secretly very thoughtful and always observant.

                7) What would this character’s nickname be? If her name is ‘Tara’ it would be “Terror”, If Kristin, then “Kris”, if Sierra, the “C’ya”

                7) What would this character’s nickname be? Mii

Ummm, she actually doesn’t have a nickname that I can think of.

                8) Character’s greatest strength: Intelligence and recognizing when someone’s being less than truthful.

                8) Character’s greatest strength: Intuitive

Probably her intelligence or her loyalty.

                9) Character’s fatal flaw: Her tendency to go it alone and not ever ask for help.

                9) Character’s fatal flaw: Thinks too much or not enough.

I’d agree with Brian on this one–she’s a loner when it comes to a lot of things.

                10) Character’s favorite color(s): Soft grays, natural blues

                10) Character’s favorite color(s): Bright yellow

                Teal like the ocean.

Good guesses, guys!  That was really fun!

                    Wow, that picture’s awesome!

                    1)  Name:  Ranya, Neruna, Zuri, Adah?  (I’m just making up names lol)

                    2)  Age:  17

                    3)  Career/role-in-story:  I’d say she’s a side character, friend to the MC;  possibly the chieftain’s daughter or a princess

                    4)  Personality:  creative, bold, fun-loving, loyal, extroverted

                    5)  Would you be friends with this character?:  yeah!!

                    6)  Any other details you might have gotten from the picture:  she looks exotic, maybe African or from an African-type culture?

                    7)  What would this character’s nickname be?  Why?:  Waris means desert flower in African, so something like that

                    8)  Character’s greatest strength:  being able to step outside of her comfort zone

                    9)  Character’s fatal flaw:  I could see her getting impatient with people, I don’t know why tho, lol

                    10)  Phrase that the character is likely to say:  “Don’t hesitate, you might miss something!”

                    11) Character’s favorite color(s):  I’ll take a wild guess and say purple 😉

                      @emma-walker

Wow, she’s gorgeous!  did u make those?

                      1) Name:  Taliya, Alaya, Riana?  Something melodic.

                      2) Age:  19 or 21

                      3) Career/role in story:  she’s probably a secondary character, maybe a soldier and ally to the MC?

                      4) Personality:  intelligent, tactical, reserved, creative

                      5) Would you be friends with this character?:  yeah… if she’d be friends with me, lol

                      6) Any other details you may have gotten from the picture: she looks like a soldier in the first one, but she also seems sweet and shy in the second one.  Maybe she had a rough past that hardened her?

                      7) What would this character’s nickname be? Why?:  Lia?  she looks like a Lia to me.

                      8) Character’s greatest strength:  intelligence and tactical abilities

                      9) Character’s fatal flaw:  self-isolating and blocking out her emotions

                      10) Phrase that this character is likely to say:  “I don’t want to hurt you, but I will if I have to.”

                      11) Character’s favorite color(s):  blue or soft green

                            I’ll try her!

                            1) Name: Kharissa?  (I thought she looked kinda like a Nightsister or something lol)

                            2) Age: Probably 16?

                            3) Career/Role in Story: Definitely the MC.  She strikes me as an outcast kinda person, so maybe she was a Nightsister but ended up leaving and going to be a bounty hunter or assassin or something.

                            4) Personality: Clever, competitive, thrill-seeking, snarky

                            5) Would you be friends with that character?: Yeah, she looks pretty cool to hang around.

                            6) Any other details you may have gotten from the picture: she’s eclectic, or at least makes eclectic friends (lol) and maybe she likes sword fighting or practicing with a stolen lightsaber… wait, maybe she’s also a thief/pickpocket???

                            7) What would this character’s nickname be? Why?: Huntress (if we’re still thinking Nightsister/bounty hunter)

                            8) Character’s greatest strength: Intelligence, getting out of tough scrapes

                            9) Character’s fatal flaw: arrogance, maybe?  overly self-confident?

                            10) Phrase that this character is likely to say: (after a fight/chase through the city) “Well that was fun!”

                            11) Character’s favorite color(s): Imma go out on a limb and say pink and black

                            How’d I do?

                              @rose-colored-fancy

                              1) Name: Atalia, Leonora, or Alicia. I think her name is kind of elegant.

Yeah, I get that mindset, but her name is actually Holly, lol XD

                              2) Age: Between 16 and 20, I think.

                              Correct!  She’s 19.

                              3) Career/Role in Story: I think she’s the MC, and I don’t think she has a job yet. Though I could see her going into a tech career. (Assuming it’s a contemporary setting)

Correct… sort of XD  She’s one of the main characters, but she does have a job.  The story’s a little complicated bc it’s technically contemporary, but the characters are trapped on an island and forced to live a rudimentary life of survival.  So, long story short, she’s one of the leaders on the island/gardener.  lol

                              4) Personality: Clever, thoughtful, determined, probably quiet. Introverted and studious.

She’s a social introvert, so she has all that + leadership skills.

                              5) Would you be friends with that character?: Yes! She looks like a cool person to talk to, and I think she’d be really nice.

Good taste, because she’s awesome! 😜

                              6) Any other details you may have gotten from the picture: I think she’s organized and likes things like math and physics. She’s probably a good friend and has a pet. I think she enjoys thunderstorms or rain, and she has a lot of houseplants.

She’s totally a math and science girl!  She’s a very supportive friend, and she never had a pet, but she always wanted a cat.  She loves thunderstorms, especially right before the rain falls.  She lives on a jungle island, so I guess that sort of counts as houseplants…? XD

                              7) What would this character’s nickname be? Why?: No idea XD

                              She doesn’t have one, lol

                              8) Character’s greatest strength: Determination, focus, and logic.

                              Leadership skills and self-confidence.  Close… 😉

                              9) Character’s fatal flaw: Probably insecurity and a tendency to shut people off or be overly critical.

She’s actually downplays herself and represses her feelings bc she thinks they make her weak.

                              10) Phrase that this character is likely to say: “That isn’t technically correct.”

I could see her saying that!  Maybe she’d say,  “I just want to do what’s best for everyone” or something like that.

                              11) Character’s favorite color(s): I think she likes green and neutrals.

                              You got it!

Wow, I didn’t realize how much you could tell about someone’s personality from looking at them, lol!!! XD  Great job, Rose!  (this is so fun) <3
