Hey, nice blog there! Also, very cool dogs!
In case you were curious, I’m still thinking about college. As I have researched more, I came to a realistic conclusion that animal photography better fit my natural strengths than, say, starting up a goldfish shop. However, in another sense, I would still have a business – it…[Read more]

I think they’re just ordinary goldfish, though I’m not 100% certain. A friend of ours bred them for a while and gave us a few. They don’t look particularly odd though, so I’m guessing they’re just normal ones.
@wordsmith Thank you! I have an Instagram account dedicated to it, so I discuss a lot of stuff on there (my handle is…[Read more]

Thanks man! I’m glad my thoughts are at least somewhat interesting. 🙂
I’m sure there are many people who disagree with you, but I think several would concede that more conflict at least makes a story better, but conflict being omnipresent is not necessarily always needed for a good story.
I’d take the conservative and de…

Ideally, yes, I would like to own a goldfish shop. But life doesn’t always go the way one might expect, so if that doesn’t work, I’ll try another approach.
I’ll make sure to look at that website… it looks cool. 😀
However, I do not have a blog. The nonfiction articles I wrote were not published; they were written because I had…[Read more]

The society in this world, without the villain, is well, wild as the wild can be. Except the birds are very intelligent with certain beliefs. It is the villain who changes this, wishing for an empire that was “tame” and “domesticated” and “civilized” and most importantly, “controllable.” This villain arranges a world where…[Read more]

Just a quick warning that all Murakami’s books have a lot of sexual content, so if that (understandably) bothers you, probably best to stay away.
1Q84 doesn’t flawlessly mirror each character in where they start out and where they end, but it does introduce a double handful of motifs and themes and will carry forward even when the…[Read more]

There is plenty of conflict–I suspect this book would fall somewhere in between Eastern and Western structure? If such a middle-ground exists–but it’s more for the sake of showing character than pushing the story.
There is certainly huge overlap between most story structures that I’m aware of, and plenty of books I’d say are defin…[Read more]

I have just always been fascinated with animals, ever since I was kid. I’m not sure why, but the fact that I lived in the country probably helped, where I have access to nature 24 hours a day. I currently have two tropical aquariums, one with platies and Corydoras catfish and another with guppies, a golden mystery snail, and a sunset…[Read more]

@wordsmith Thank you so much! I always enjoy reading your insights on stuff when I come across them on the forum, so that means a lot.
I agree with you that writers need to learn the differences between East/West structures. Just that they exist, even. I don’t think the Western structure is inherently bad, but I don’t appreciate all its…[Read more]

Many moon ago, I told Josiah that I’d write about the idea that conflict is not the most fundamental aspect of good story… You know, that thing every good writer accepts as basic fact!
I’ve finally published that essay, and you can read it for free right here.

@wordsmith Yes–highly proficient writers certainly still read! But in terms of reading for the purposes of studying the craft, the brand new writer who picks up a novel to read it analytically will obviously grow more as a writer through it than, say, Stephen King does. 😛 So while skilled writers may read less, as you said, their reasons…[Read more]

All of these things are not why people should read. They might be part of why people should read. But they are only part. And, I’d argue a small part.
Books are writer’s teachers by experience. We read and soak up. We experience words and worlds of other places. We start to catch onto bits and pieces of history, culture, and languag…

Hey, there! So, after reading your draft, I have a few things to note. First, I think these were just typos:
“I blink as I moving along scaffold…”
“Light streams from of the box.”.
Next, it seems to me you use ‘inhale’ too much. Perhaps, find a synonym or two? I know that inhale is the most concise way of saying ‘took a breath…[Read more]
