Have you ever read that book where you kept reading and there was this one subplot character that you just could NOT work out? The rando who turned up to offer wisdom, then vanishes? Maybe they tag around as a mentor figure, but are constantly off doing there own thing behind the scenes? Two very different examples of this that I can think of, are…[Read more]

@h-jones Yes, it is! I have so much to be proud of on my Polish side, and even more on my Jewish side! ^0^
Oh, thank you for asking!! My current WIP is a short story (intended to be an introduction to a longer series) about a boy living in Victorian Era America who becomes the Grim Reaper’s assistant, and he has to help him hunt down the ghost of…[Read more]

Hi, @i-david. Have you read I Am David, by Anne Holm? Or Just David, by Eleanor H. Porter? I haven’t read them recently enough to remember what they’re about, your tag just reminds me of them.
Speaking of which, we should all share our favorite guy books.
Some of my favorites are Redwall, by Brian Jacques, the Time Echoes series, by Bryan Davi…[Read more]

@taylorclogston The feeling is mutual! I love the balance that you bring to the conversation.
I definitely think you’re right about the value that Western culture places on the rational over the mystical. We’ve lost something and gained something by that, I think. But all things happen in cycles, I think. So we’re probably due for some kind of…[Read more]

Hey, everyone! I was just thinking of all the guilds and how we now have a badge, or coat-of-arms-of-sorts, and I was reading through our Parimi Alca backstory. Well, it came to my attention that I have never seen or heard of us having a Creed of any kind. Does our guild have a Creed of its own? If not, do you think we should? I was thinking of…[Read more]

Okay, thanks for the tip! Wow, that’s a big goal, but way to go…I’m sure you can do it!
Yeah, this is my first Word War. I wasn’t sure how it would be, but now…I LOVE it. I’ve been struggling with motivation for one of my short stories lately, but this word war has really helped my progress and I am so glad.
May the best…[Read more]

Thanks for the invitation to go stalk your website. 😆 I’ve actually only ever read one of the books that you recommended, The Art of Fiction by John Gardner, but I’m gonna check out some of the other resources. Thanks for sharing with me!
This copy work idea is sounding more and more amazing. It makes a lot of sense. (BTW, fifty…[Read more]

But I’m slightly confused…what were you referring to when you said you didn’t have one so you didn’t know?
Thanks so much for that link! I’m gonna to read it when I have time…I look super helpful!

@taylorclogston We’ll just toss up our word counts at the end. No need for verification, it’s just a matter of being honest.
@evelyn Stellar! AND YES. PARIMIS MUST WIN.
@julia I am checking with Daeus right now, and will get back to you ASAP.
@steward-of-the-pen You’ll do great! And again, checking with Daeus. Also, yes. We have a prompt war at…[Read more]

@taylorclogston Forgive me for once again falling into the language of absolutes (“must point beyond this world”). I am far too attached to my ideas when once they take root in my head!

@taylorclogston I’m glad you mentioned the ideas: “sufficiently advanced science is indistinguishable from magic” and “sufficiently analyzed magic is indistinguishable from science”. The fact that they resonate deeply with you explains your starting point a lot more to me. And when I say that those same ideas are ones that I have been more and mor…[Read more]

What would you say is one of the hardest things you struggle with as a novice writer?
I think one of my biggest issues is description/evocative writing/showing not telling. I am SO bad at creating interesting scenes because my writing goes mostly like this:

I’m not sure if this is the block but I do have a question. Great thoughts guys. And good distinction between hard magic and soft magic. I definitely lean more towards soft. I see the merit in hard magic, and it certainly has a lot more wiggle room for cool originality instead of just ‘ooh, spiritual giftssss’, but soft magic definitely fits with my…[Read more]
