Right, I suppose they are. lol I have been cautioned in the past from using made-up fantasy names used by someone else particularly commercial entertainment groups for legal reasons. I am not sure how true that is but it seems logical as some groups can be sensitive to possible copyright issues. Otherwise real-world names…[Read more]

Thanks! I have noticed in Brandon Sanderson’s books like Stormlight Archive and Mistborn, he only gives surnames to rich/nobility. I think Europe did the same thing in the late middle ages and common people had nicknames.
So far I have been using fantasy name generators and I usually find a name and then tweak it so it…[Read more]

Thanks, I will have some fun with that idea. The first era of my story is probably most relatable to Lotr, so I probably won’t use real names, unless it is something like Sam short for Samwise.
I do like lotr method for surnames. I will have plenty of nicknames that can act like a surname too. I think our surnames actually came from…[Read more]

Hi Lavender! Welcome to the crew!
I am also working on my first fantasy novel. I also prefer Marvel because spiderman is my favorite superhero. I am starting to get into mythology a bit more but I love languages. I am slowly learning Latin to better understand the roots of English and also French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese,…[Read more]

I am currently trying to come up with names for characters in my fantasy story. I am not sure if using real-world names would fit in my world. Any good strategies on how to best come up with names? Also, what do you think of using surnames like we do today or doing what Lord of the rings did such as “son/daughter of” or “house of (founding father…[Read more]

Yeah, thanks. I am sure I will eventually figure it out. -

@r-m-archer
Yes, I have been constantly exploring what they have for instruction but does not seem to be as in-depth as I would like. I have kinda figured out the articles but they keep hinting you can do more with them, mainly customizing them to fit what you need. That part I want to learn and will leave the cool cosmetic stuff for later. -

Well, I guess I am more frustrated with trying to draw a good map that seems fitting for my story but can’t seem to find the right layout. My main issue is that I need to draw a world map and then be able to take a regional and enlarge it to give more in-depth detail for each book. It seems to be possible but the first issue is…[Read more]

Good question! I would honestly say everything. For fantasy, I try to make it as rational as possible for both religious and scientific aspects.
Planetary :
Atmosphere, terrain, materials that can be used for crafting, food/water resources, is it easy or harsh to survive, Is it made of one or many biomes, (if you are doing magic or…[Read more]

This is will be very helpful for feedback for what I come up with. I will probably end up cooking up names and then giving them meaning after I have fully figured out my cultures.

Nice! Same here for the worldbuilding aspect! Though several people here have told me, minus the invention of languages, I am being far more ambitious than CS Lewis and Tolkien. XD
In case you have not noticed yet, it is important to put the person’s username tag like @erynne and I have done when responding to you. And that is totally…[Read more]

Hey Everyone!
I was wondering if anyone here has created a map for their story especially if is sci-fi or fantasy? What resources did you use? I am currently trying to create one with Inkarnate and have not made one satisfactory yet that fits my story.

XD Yeah that is never an easy thing to do and I often get emotional breaking characters like her. I often have to listen to sad/solemn music to get into that mindset. However, I try to balance it out by providing her with plenty of people who love her with godly unconditional love and will support her through everything. My emotions really…[Read more] -

Sorry XD I promise not all my characters have it this hard. My world is torn by war which leaves orphans and widows in its path. My main group of characters are survivors brought together to help forge a haven of peace and prosperity and will serve as a shield for others so they do not have to know such pain. It takes people of faith to…[Read more]
