*waves* It’s me. Your friendly neighborhood INFP. The crazy one. The one who writes books.
And… yeah. That’s half of the guild. XD
*coughs* Onward. To state it simply, I’ve been wrestling with a particular issue over the last year and a half and could use some prayer.
Why didn’t I say anything before? Well… that’s kinda the issue. 😛 I have…[Read more]

@kate Thanks for all the input, and for volunteering to submit the final draft.
I do think we should try and vote as soon as possible, so we can put as much work into the draft before we submit it.
For those of you who haven’t read them yet:

@germaine-han, I like what you said about developing the character in the present rather than the past. I think that’s so important to remember. Some authors do all this fantastic development in character’s backstory but do very little in the present and expect you to like the character based on his past, even though nothing is going on in the pre…[Read more]

Okay, everybody.
Epic reveal:
I could’t decide on the title Fish: Child, or Child Fish. Votes would be appreciated. Of if you have a better title suggestion, that would also be appreciated.
The human might need a name, too, but I’m not as worried about that.
Other than that, edit away. Which kind of scares me, but this is going t…[Read more]

I absolutely love what @daeus-lamb said. Backstories can be a very powerful part of your plot. And what @samuel said about timing. I think Sanderson also does an amazing job with that. He adds little hints and comments throughout his story that keeps you wondering. When he finally reveals the backstory it’s like reading the next book in a series…[Read more]

@Daeus-lamb ooh, backstory as a plot device!
*sits down**coolly arranges skirt* I have Thoughts.
Sanderson. Is a genius. Ever since I was literally shaking over the last pages of The Well of Ascension I’ve been doing serious analysis of how he does it. Some of the thoughts are more relevant to story structure than this backstory discussion, but…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb Yes, I love The Book Thief! Between you and @kate, I think I see this concept better now.
@noah-litle As if you haven’t received enough encouragement on the fishbowl idea yet, but go for it! I can’t wait to see how it turns out and what we’ll turn it into.
@samuel That sounds good. It’s just that we’d need him to bring up something…[Read more]

Imma add my voice to the general consensus. It changes a little from character to character, but generally speaking it usually fills in as I write. Character creation is a very intuitive process for me. I start with a name. Sometimes not even that.
Once I’ve worked with a character for a chapter (or a whole story, depending on how tricky they…[Read more]

@Noahlitle @ethryndal @daeus-lamb @samuel @r-m-archer guys, I had an idea/thought. I was ruminating over prose and its connection to the identity side of the character’s voice, and I pulled up an old thought that it might be helpful to share here.
In regards to metaphors, character voice determines their mood and connotations. For instance, a…[Read more]

@samuel Welcome back to the guild! And yes, I love milk tea as well. Did you travel to China or did/do you live in China, and did you like any specific type of tea there?
I’m ethnically Asian and live/lived in that part of the world for basically all my life, so that’s why I’m so interested about a reference to China.
@r-j-karas Yeah, it’s…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb @kate @samuel @noahlitle I took the test and ended up with ENFP-T. The description actually sounds not too far off, so I guess I’ll call myself that from now on. 🙂

@kate Cool – thanks for explaining! And yes, I do know all of those characters.
As for being overdramatic, I’m not so sure about that – for me at least 😉 I am highly an introvert, love to hang out with the right people, but hate crowds, much less being the center of attention. However, I really enjoy public speaking and I love one on one con…[Read more] -

@samuel Actually, as far as I know, it was designed for social interaction, you just have to understand the cognitive functions to get to that.

@kate Oh. XD That’s hilarious. My mistake. Mild deslyxia strikes again!
*fist bump anyway?*
@daeus-lamb Oh. That makes sense. Cool.
@r-j-karas Thanks. Still in the middle of learning that. Probably will still be learning it years from now.

@Rosemarylouise @samuel the difficulty with online tests is that they A. require a great deal of deep personal knowledge and honesty, and B. too often asses due to psychological ‘symptoms’, or traits that are generally an indication of your mental structure but can also be attributed to other things, and throw the test score off. Such as your life…[Read more]

@samuel Yeah, right on. It’s all about your brain much more than your actions. The tests do get a lot of people right but they get a lot of people wrong too.
-
RoseMaryLouise replied to the topic Talk, you frigid people! in the forum Announcements 8 years, 1 month ago
@samuel Thanks. I haven’t actually taken any of the tests, so my type is based entirely on a chart I found, so it’s even more inaccurate than it probably would be anyway. 🙂
