I think my favorite arc is Artemis Fowl. First of all, it’s a redemption arc, which is the bestiestestest! It happens over several books so that it feels earned. It’s so much more satisfying to see him being “good” in the later books because you know he wasn’t always like that.
In one of the books, one of the POV characters “dies”. As she lays…[Read more]

@seekjustice how is it going?

@shadowwriter161 Google is helpful. There are a lot of centuries in history, so you are going to want to narrow it down. One way I choose a time period is by thinking about what technology do I want available, and more importantly, what do I want not available? If I want guns but not electricity, that narrows down my time period a lot.
Then start…[Read more]

So, in the interest of A Decision Needs To Be Made, I am going to say that since @seekjustice is our writer, and she already has a plan, we are going to go with her idea.
@the-inkspiller I appreciate the work you put into your outline, but I think it will be easier for seekjustice to write her story idea rather than to write someone else’s story…[Read more]

Write a story where you bring out the beauty of something ordinary in the middle of a very dramatic setting.
So… we need to decide our setting and premise. Today, if possible, so @seekjustice can start writing tomorrow. Seekjustice, you said you had an idea you wanted to flesh out. Is that ready? @filewriter also came up with some good…[Read more]

@seekjustice Thank you for volunteering to write this month! We are getting to the point where we need to choose our object. So far we have water (for a person lost in a desert), air (for someone drowning), a shard of glass, a landmark (for someone lost in general), a hammer (as a potential weapon) and a bird that can signal water is nearby…[Read more]

Welcome @trallion !! We met in the chat. This is Amy. I am in charge of our monthly prompt wars. You can find this month’s thread about that here. It’s not related to the Embers Wide short story competition going on. This month’s deadline is June 30th, and the word limit is 2500 words.
We generally brainstorm for a week, and then write and edit…[Read more]

@karthmin Write parties sound amazing! I only have one friend irl that I could do that with, but we have had word wars together before through chat. Erekdale does that with word sprints sometimes. It’s mostly during the word wars, but I think people do it while not in a war as well.
Those are great because normally I would spend five minutes…[Read more]

@kelly-lundgren That’s what I was thinking when I first suggested multiple writers, but I think this way is worth a try. If it turns out it doesn’t work, then we can go back to multiple writers next month. You could still edit?
@seekjustice Thank you!!! I am horrible at things like description and dramatic prose, and it sounds like those skills…[Read more]

@kayla-skywriter I don’t think it matters that much. As @taylorclogston says, denominations are just groups of people who align in beliefs on certain doctrine. Obviously, some of those beliefs are going to be more important than others. While there are some things I need to stand on, there are many doctrinal differences where I can understand why…[Read more]

It’s that time of the month again! Where we gather together and raise our pens in determination! To battle! This month’s prompt is “Write a story where you bring out the beauty of something ordinary in the middle of a very dramatic setting” which… wow. That sounds tough.
Here is the brainstorm doc. We can also brainstorm in the chat.
This…[Read more]

Princess Foo replied to the topic Week 14: Writing Life; Self vs. Traditional Publishing (Daeus, Jane, Faith) in the forum Weekly Theme Discussion 7 years ago
@karthmin Did you have a good vacation?
I want to be traditionally published one day. I personally don’t read self-published books (except Hope Ann’s), because the ones I had read have not been good. Like, give up reading after the first two pages because I am so annoyed at the writing bad. I just don’t trust ’em. I don’t want my book to be like…[Read more]

Princess Foo replied to the topic Week 13: Writing Life; Typing vs. Writing (Me) in the forum Weekly Theme Discussion 7 years ago
@karthmin
I have never really thought about that before. I write by typing, and I can’t imagine writing by hand. I have written a couple of papers by hand and thought typing is so much better. I tend to change direction a lot as I write, and you can’t really do that as you write by hand. For instance, I will think “Actually this sentence would be…[Read more] -

@kr-lalonde Blah the tag didn’t work in my first post.
Your comment about how no contests fit your needs reminds me of this website. It has a list of places that will buy short stories from you. If you want a goal, you could try and get published by one of those.

Well, I just started freelancing as a writer last Monday. (My website is acaylor.com if anyone is interested. I’m not trying to spam or sell something, because I know that’s against the forum guidelines, but it seemed relevant. If anyone had any tips about freelancing or editing as a career, it would be appreciated.) My purpose in writing has…[Read more]

@hope-ann Okay! I see your point. I implemented the multiple writers thing to keep any one writer from feeling overwhelmed, but I don’t know if it is making much of a difference. Let’s try it, and if it doesn’t work we can try something else.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how the other guilds write the stories, and if they do anything…[Read more]
