I have never really thought about that before. I write by typing, and I can’t imagine writing by hand. I have written a couple of papers by hand and thought typing is so much better. I tend to change direction a lot as I write, and you can’t really do that as you write by hand. For instance, I will think “Actually this sentence would be better in the middle of the paragraph instead of the end.” and “Actually instead of characters getting to Minor Point A in this conversation I want them to get to Minor Point B so I will need to delete the last couple of sentences and tweak a little bit of the earlier conversation.” and “Actually it makes more sense for them to be talking about Character X when the topic of having a bad temper comes up instead of Character Y. But they are still talking about having a bad temper so I want to keep most of what I have and change some of the details.” I can’t fix that stuff when I am writing by hand—at least not nearly as easily as typing it out.

So I guess that makes me a person that self-edits as I write. But I don’t know, it is what works for me.
