Hi guys,
One element of character development I’ve never heard discussed before is strange ways of speaking. Think of Gollum, Pete the sock man, Spook, etc.
I’m going to propose that these oddities are not only charming but make a story world immersive and strikingly real.
As far as character development goes, all I can say is that I always r…[Read more]

@julianne – Nah, I think we all probably come up with some dark stuff at times. I think it’s in stories with plenty of darkness that the light we want to share can shine brightest 🙂

Thanks, @julianne, @r-j-karas, and @kate! I really appreciate you guys’ input. It really means a lot to me.
@kate Yeah, I wondered about that. I don’t work on writing projects on Saturday, so I understand.

@r-j-karas Thanks. XD I was going to ask about that.
Last day, guys. I plan on doing some serious editing on it this morning. I would appreciate anyone who could be there with me, or at least keep an eye on it. I’ll be keeping an eye peeled here, but I’ll mostly be on the Google doc. Planning on being there sometime around 10:30 or so.

@germaine-han, I like what you said about developing the character in the present rather than the past. I think that’s so important to remember. Some authors do all this fantastic development in character’s backstory but do very little in the present and expect you to like the character based on his past, even though nothing is going on in the pre…[Read more]

I just had to try it, and found it to be tons of fun. 🙂 For me, the best way to learn is just to do it—er, try to do it 😉 Whether my prose is a worthwhile start, only you all can be the judge. Hey guys, sorry I’m late this week. I had a lot on my plate.
Better late than never though.
When it comes to character development, one of the stupidest things I ever did was ignore backstory. (Head, this is wall. Wall, meet head.)
I’m still not an expert at it though, so I wanted to ask: how do you develop a character’s backstory? Along the…[Read more]

If you checked our guild war calendar recently, you’d know that this is the date for another story prompt competition. I know our story (and we as writers) will benefit a lot if everyone participates and shares their input.

@r-j-karas This is great! It’s beautiful and it’s a touching story, plus the concept of writing those backstories is amazing in itself.
One thing I particularly liked about the story was the allusion to Rahab, and how it connected the mind to more places in the Bible and brought together the cohesiveness of the story and biblical times as…[Read more]

@Julianne yeah, I relate to Shallan in a lot of ways. But overall, the moral absolutes (or lack thereof :P) presented in her storyline have been probably the most frustrating thing about the Archive.

Loving all the feedback. And I’m starting to realize myself that even I need to appreciate guilt more.
I actually had a, er, strange case study in guilt once. I dreamed that I did something absolutely abominable — something I would never even think of doing. Upon waking, it was still real enough that I could imagine what it would feel like if I…[Read more]

I haven’t done much writing involving guilt. Mainly because it is such a hard topic to write without becoming boring or preachy.
I agree with @julianne. One of the best examples of guilt is Edmund.
To use guilt in writing I think we need to observe our own lives and those around us. We need to turn to the Bible and search out the many examples o…[Read more]

Saxon Scribes,
Lo, guilt is fascinating.
I totally love it. The Scarlet Letter, Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov. These are like butter on bread to me.
Guilt is something we don’t see a lot these days. About the only times it’s used in fiction, it’s used poorly. The guilt isn’t fully built up to, doesn’t feel authentic, and leads t…[Read more]
