@j-a-penrose Most of my characters exist not only to drive the plot forward, but to create the plot itself–in the form of conflict. In my most recently published novel, titled “The Cry of the Lost”, Tory Hayfield and Ruby Westhouse are literally faced with conflict at school, in the form of several bullies who give them no peace. How the girls…[Read more]

Thank you for your input to my question! 🙂 I recently watched Rogue One as well as The Last Jedi. Comparing The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and Last Jedi – Rogue One wins. The one downside was that quick scene changes – I felt like it was a bit difficult to follow at first and a lot of things were packed in… perhaps a bit too tightly?

1. What are three things you know about characters?
- Characters should change throughout the story. (Yearnings are important for character arcs.)
- They must be unique. (The reader should be able to tell which character is speaking without a dialogue tag.)
- They are the most important part of a story. (Without good characters,…

1. What are three things you know about characters? – They must be unique and memorable, they can come in all shapes and sizes, they can be used as foils of each other to demonstrate your story’s theme.
2. What are three things you’d like to know about characters? – I would like to learn how to write realistic characters (in their s…[Read more]

As for times, @j-a-penrose, any time works for me! What we are doing now is great, but if it needs to change, so be it! -

What are three things you know about characters?
- They should be like real people—flawed, but virtuous in some ways and able to justify their actions. There should be no perfectly good characters and no perfectly evil characters.
- They should be consistent. Their actions should match up with their beliefs. They’re shaped by…

@j-a-penrose
What are three things you know about characters?
1. Characters drive the plot- actions don’t just happen in a vacuum.
2. Characters should be individual persons with tangible wants and beliefs- not just philosophical ideas (unless you’re Dostoevsky, of course).
3. Characters can make or break a work of fiction.
What are three things…[Read more] -

Happy New Years!:)
1. What are three things you know about characters?
1.1 Characters are the reason/s why readers continue reading a story even when the plot may be terrible. (Human beings tend to have an easier time loving other humans or superhumans such as Clark Kent yet the latter said species also have a very human side -…[Read more]

First off, I’m not sure if I’m doing this right…. :p Creating a topic, I mean. I’ve never done this, so if this is wrong, sorry! XD (and sorry if I missed tagging someone I should’ve… I still need to find like a list of people or something, lol)
So I started this short story, I suppose it is, on a whim yesterday night because I wanted to…[Read more]

@j-a-penrose Happy New Years!
1. What are three things you know about characters?
- The struggles of characters are a good way to make the story more personal and relatable to the readers
- Perfect characters are unrealistic
- And finally sarcastic characters are the best! 😉
2. What are three things you would like to know about characters?

@j-a-penrose Just so you know, you made this thread twice!
1. What are three things you know about characters?
- It’s okay to have less-fleshed out characters who don’t have the spotlight. A 2D character seen from only one angle looks 3D.
- Characters are agents who drive the plot and express the theme.
- Characters are the interface between the…

Okay, the Q&A should be fine then! I guess we’ll work that out when we’re close to actually doing one, but I think I’ll be able to use my own account.
All right, will do with the tagging then. *nods* I can definitely see how it could get out of hand if anyone was allowed to do it anytime. Having our own recent activity pages ought…[Read more]

@pursuewisdom My break was great! Pretty quiet, with lots of time for reading and writing, which is something I hadn’t had in a while. How was yours?
I would definitely recommend it (and I think @j-a-penrose would too), but I guess whether or not it’s worth it for you would depend on where you are as a writer and how you learn…[Read more]

@j-a-penrose  Nononono you don’t have to apologize!! I personally haven’t had any problems with this guild since I joined.

@j-a-penrose And I can generally devote 10-60 minutes of time a week to the site. I know that’s not much, but at least it’s something.

@j-a-penrose I haven’t been very active on here of late either. But I’m here now!
1. Definitely! Mini word wars sounds like a great idea, and talking about what we’re writing could be very useful/fun.
2. Well, I think with the twice-a-month guild wars, interguild competitions other than word wars might be a stretch, but it’s not a bad idea.…[Read more]

@j-a-penrose Hey there is nothing to worry about we all have difficult parts of our lives.
1. I like the idea for a general topic just because there are times when I want to talk to everyone about other things than writing.
2. How would we do the interguild competitions? Sorry you might have already said how, I skimmed a lot of this topic.

Hey, no need to apologize. You’ve been an amazing guildmaster and friend. You have helped me more than I thought was possible (you know this 😉 ), and I’m forever thankful for it.
