Hey Avensers!
I have another little exercise for ya.
Emotional reactions are often connected to what we value. When something we hold dear is insulted, it evokes a strong emotional reaction. That said, what characters get emotional about should be directly tied to what they value.
Say your character Phil loves unicorns and has dedicated many years to discovering their secrets. If a random person walks up to him and says unicorns are as useless as regular horses, he will feel insulted. Not only was this a stupid thing for the ignorant fellow to say, but he has also insulted and devalued something Phil loves deeply.
Take a second to consider what your character values and make sure he reacts appropriately when what he loves is threatened. Linking emotions to what a character values will show readers a deeper part of him by revealing what he finds important.
Feel free to post your findings 🙂
