Many moon ago, I told Josiah that I’d write about the idea that conflict is not the most fundamental aspect of good story… You know, that thing every good writer accepts as basic fact!
I’ve finally published that essay, and you can read it for free right here.

Brian Stansell started the topic Examples of How You Use Subtext in the forum Contemporary Fiction Writers 4 years, 8 months ago
I love the idea of things hidden below the surface. Of mysterious buried treasures, and ways to implant certain words or innuendos that have either a dual meaning or are indicative of an even larger mystery lurking beneath the surface action of the story.
I was interested in how each of you uses the concept of subtext in your personal writing,…[Read more]

That’s good food for thought about my Midpoint. In some ways it resembles a bit more of a 3rd plot point, actually… I’ll think on that. Thanks for your thoughts!

@nataliecone
Hey Natalie!I say an Amen! to Daeus (@daeus-lamb) on this one.
He is right. If you over plan or write an outline that is too dense or detailed, all of your creative energy and the mystery of discovery will be spent on the dry bones of a story, that needs the flesh, blood, muscle, sinews, breaths, sweat, and tears to fully come…[Read more]

So, I have a dilemma regarding my 200k epic fantasy novel that I’m hoping to get some thoughts on. But first, a little background:
I wrote the second draft of my epic fantasy last year. Rewrite might be a better word, since it was radically different from the first draft. I outlined most of it, though the plan for the second half of the book was…[Read more]

I am curious, for all my fellow Mystery/Suspense/Thriller Writers out there, how do you begin your stories of this type? Are you willing to share some of your personal examples of your opening lines from a WIP that you use to grab a reader’s attention?
Here are a few that I have used in some stories:

How long is it? Or what would you compare it to in length?
I would love to read it, but I have several other projects going and don’t want to get too overwhelmed. (And I don’t know why, but for some reason I’m imagining it as this massive book. 😂)

I’d love to! I love fantasy, plus I think I ran out of new books my mom will actually let me read 😅
If you want a review from a young teen girl that is XD

I just put in the following search string in YTube “Best Voice Recorder Apps For Android That Are Simple to Use”. The video has several options offer, but I would check to make sure the Apps listed are free to use.

That is probably what happened with one of my posts. I had wanted to put in a quote from something else and I think the form got tired of waiting on me to find it. 🙂

I guess I would have a correlated email somewhere…[Read more]

Hi Daeus,
Seems like the tech glitches are resurfacing. Did someone pour water on a Gremlin?

There seems to have been a bug in the forum, for several people, the past week’s posts (in several threads) have disappeared. Anything before that or after yesterday is still intact, but there’s a gap. Is anyone else having this problem, and is there any way the posts can be recovered?

Cool topic! That sounds very interesting.
I guess for me it kind of depends. Sometimes I’ll start with a character that I want to work with, and other times (like with my current WIP), I start with a what if such-and-such happened? type question, figure out a storyline that works, and deal with what remains whenever I can. I guess I…[Read more]
