Have you read ‘The Star Under The City’ by Maggie Joy? It is an awesome book I just got yesterday. I’m almost finished because I stayed up late yesterday to read and have read since I’ve been home. I love it, @annethestorynerdgirl!

If you’ve never lived there I think a lot of research is in order. You should research British terms, customs, traditions…Anything you can get. In 1940 the war was about two years in so it wasn’t horrible quite yet, but still bad especially in UK and Germany. I also think weather in London is usually dreary and gray, but…[Read more]

I agree with Daeus, it shouldn’t be a big deal as long as it’s actually understood that they aren’t important, but if you want them to be important it’s probably too late. However you could introduce some sliver of back story somewhere, I think, to make the reader wonder about the character, and potentially write an…[Read more]

What ever you do, think about whether or not that plot twist would interest the reader. In many ways thinking about the reader should come before making sure your plot is fulfilled.

@annethestorynerdgirl ย @wordsmith
I agree with you, wordsmith. You really want your reader to understand what’s happening.

@annethestorynerdgirl, Here are my thoughts.
You don’t want what is called “deus ex machina”, which is sudden/random intervention from someone or something, that has no background in the story, or if it does have background you want the reader to be able to go ‘Ohhh! I see it! That was so cool!’ not “Wait… How did that happen?” I’m not saying…[Read more]

@annethestorynerdgirl Hello! I’m Aislinn! I see we are both Story Nerds, chocolate enthusiasts, and Narnians. Glad to make your acquaintance and welcome to Story Embers!

Hello! ๐
I gasped when I got this notification… I thought I was the only one who uses the term StoryNerd!! Aaah!!
So good to meet you, Aislinn! And hurrah for chocolate and Narnia and stories! Thanks so much for the welcome. ๐ (I love your profile pic btw, do you draw?)-
Well, I’m basically a nerd about most things. (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Aetherlight, and many MANY books) so it follows that I am a Story Nerd, as those are all stories! (Logic. Maybe.)
Yes. Especially chocolate. *stuffs face* I didn’t draw my propic, but I found it on Pinterest and strangely enough it looks scarily like my real face…

Yay!! I love that you totally get the meaning of “story” nerd. ๐ ๐
Agreed, especially chocolate. XD *wishes I had some right now*
Aw super! I like to draw, but my profile pic is just an image I found for free. I liked how it was whimsical, but the girl is a little too young looking to be me. lol Your pic looks more like me than my pic does…[Read more]

Hey Anne
Is HiFi supposed to be SiFi? I don’t write in that genre or haven’t read any of it in a long time. But I think I may be able to help. ๐
Luckily with the 1940s not beingย that far back, you should find a lotย of information without it being populated by lies or just guessing moreย than fact. So I recommend you re…[Read more]

@annethestorynerdgirl No problem! (Yup. ๐ Well, *pauses* you’ll be able to find out soon!)
That would be awesome! That is a good strategy in writing, at least in my opinion.
No problem! ๐

@annethestorynerdgirl I’m not an expert like @daeus-lamb is, but I don’t think that it would be too bad. I introduced a side character at the end of the story once because she was important in getting people somewhere (I’m trying not to spoil my story! ๐ ๐ ). I don’t think it will confuse readers too much, and if you are still considering having…[Read more]

@annethestorynerdgirl Maybe if you really focused in on the fact that they can be considered back up people? I’m thinking if we view them more as elements of the theme than individual people that have their own stories, then maybe it won’t seem like a big deal that they got thrown into the story at the last moment.

Hiya! What’s your favorite genre to write?
Mystery, Adventure, Action. I also like Historical Fiction and Fantasy. How about you?
Ooh cool! Same, although I haven’t really written any fantasy yet… unless my speculative history novel kinda counts as that. ๐
Have you read ‘The Star Under The City’ by Maggie Joy? It is an awesome book I just got yesterday. I’m almost finished because I stayed up late yesterday to read and have read since I’ve been home. I love it, @annethestorynerdgirl!
YES! I have read it a billion times since the very first draft!!!
LOL That’s awesome you read it so fast. Isn’t it amazing?!?!
For sure!
