Well, wonder of wonders. Who knew people could be surprising, or interesting? And here was seemingly frilly, shallow Ophelia doing a decent job at giving ballet lessons to Abirami of all people.
However, that was not nearly as surprising as Abirami doing well…that is, tolerably.
Jade squealed in shock when he swept her into the air as though she were little more than a piece of paper. Then he spun. A real spin. Had he finally gotten it? Jade spread out her arms and enjoyed the weightlessness, the rushing air, knowing that she, at least, could portray bird-like freedom and grace. Her partner wouldn’t get in the way. He had learned —
And gotten ambitious. Still holding Jade, Abirami stepped out of the spin and jumped. Unprepared for him to attempt this, Jade fell in toward him and wrapped her arms around his neck for balance.
Abirami set her down, and she bent over, trying to get her lungs to breathe again after that surprise.
“Sorry, sorry! So sorry.” Abirami now sat on the floor.
Sorry? Jade couldn’t say anything, but Ophelia did.
“What are you apologizing for? Sure that was a little… rough, but you did great! With a little more practice and… perhaps some more guidance, you’ll have it down!”
About two hours of practice later, Jade said, “That’s as good as we’re going to get with the time we’ve got. Everyone ready?”
Isaias smiled. “You betcha!”
Ophelia smiled, too, but whether it was a nervous one or a real one was hard to tell. She giggled. “I guess so. We need to get a move on, after all.”
Abirami just nodded.
”Great. Then, Abirami, go find Ku and any others who want to come,” said Jade. “And tell them there will be a meal.” And after that, the torture.

We are called to be lights in the cosmos.
May your inkwells never run dry!July 30, 2022 at 1:11 am #151960Kit:
I flinch as an explosion suddenly rocks the stone floor. I whip around to see a tall door in the wall violently erupt in a spray of blazing wood and twisted shards of metal. There’s a tall, shadowy figure looming in the gaping hole. I step back, kneading my coat nervously. He’s a good foot taller than me, and I’m 6’0″… that’s at least 7’0″… and I’m being conservative here!
Come on Kit, don’t just stand there like an idiot.
I slowly take a deep breath of cold, stale castle air and force my fingers open, letting the fur fall from my grip.
Now breathe.
Now a giant armored warrior in a strange castle is pretty terrifying, but back in the streets of Spire? This fellow would be no match for our modern tanks and machine guns and artillery. But it’s the same guy either way, right? So, I really have nothing to fear.
I pull my shoulders back and shift my frame onto one leg, just like I’ve just seen him at a party and I’m sizing him up. I tilt my head up at him.
The overall effect is impressive, I will admit, and the height really is helping. I shrug. Good for him. Personally, I would hate being that tall – good luck finding clothes to fit that frame. But, that’s exactly where I think I’m at an advantage. I might not be as tall and impressive (not that I want to be – it looks horribly inconvenient), but I think my frame carries my coat better – my “armor,” so to speak.
I turn away, scanning the crowd for Val. She’s standing by the table, interacting with a bizarrely dressed kid. I smile to myself. She looks like she’s feeling better now, so maybe once they wrap up their little chat, I’ll just walk on over and see if she maybe wants to talk to me…
I jump aside as he suddenly brushes past me, his heavy cape billowing in my face. “Hey watch it, mister!”
KIT N O
S T O P, M Y D U D E
I’m sorry, he’s annoying and absolutely full of himself, but Emperor Saevus is a villain anyways so…
Also, Saevus has a cool design! Have you seen LotR? The style reminds me a lot of Sauron and the general aesthetic of Mordor (which, even though it looks harsh and evil, has always been very interesting to me in terms of composition and storytelling – it’s just so perfect for the role these characters play in the story and aesthetic of Middle Earth!)
*laughs as one fey*
July 30, 2022 at 1:31 am #151962Thanks! Yes, I did kinda base Saevus loosely off of Sauron from lotr. Yes I have seen those movie I love them lol. Also note Saevus is Latin for cruel. (And yes, I did just blow up a door in a castle for no other reason than it was in his way)
Saevus entered the room, brushing past a young man. “Hey, watch it mister!” he called out.
Saevus stopped and turned to him. Looking down at him he scrutinized the young upstart who had dared to speak to him. A staring battle ensued before Saevus spoke.
“And who might you be, young man,” he said in a cold voice dripping with hate and malice.
July 30, 2022 at 3:00 am #151963@ethan-leonard LotR is my favorite movie series ngl. And one of my favorite book series! Have you read the books yet? They’re kind of long and slow, but I love them
And I didn’t know that about his name, but that’s really cool! It’s not too obvious, but certainly very meaningful (also it just sounds like a good evil emperor name)
Kit: The warrior turns and stares at me, and part of me wants to cringe and melt away. Part of me. The other part wants to deliberately stare right back at him until I make it awkward – it’s a fun game, and one that I’m really good at, so of course that’s the option I’m choosing
I stare right back at him, letting a tiny smirk play at the corner of my lip.
“And who might you be, young man,” his voice is deep and icy cold, practically frosted over with seething hatred. I pause.
“Me?” I smooth out my coat and grin innocently. “I’m Kit, of course. You just walked right into me, you know that?”
I’m not really sure what he’s going to say to that.
I think I’m going to assume that he’s the type people try to ignore if they can. I bet no one’s ever asked his name before.
What an utterly miserable existence.
If that’s the case…then I’d feel really sorry for him, if I’m going to be honest. Or, maybe he likes being alone – who knows.
So if, say, just assume I were to ask…either he’ll loosen up a little, maybe a little shocked at my friendliness, or he’ll become completely and utterly annoyed – and in that case, his reaction, might be kind of funny so…
I stare him in the eye (…helmet slits?) and twist my lips in a sugary grin.
“And what might yours be, young man – I’m sorry, sir?”
Deliberate, of course – let’s see how he likes being called young man.

A woman walked up to me and gave me a small smile. I smiled back, making note of her curly hair, brown eyes, and how eerily similar her clothes were to an Extranei. However, there were multiple other people who were wearing foreign clothes as well. But then it could be to blend in. Or it could be to distract me the actual traitor.
“I don’t know about a waiter, but I might have some water,” the woman said, scattering my thoughts. She took a small flask out of her bag and poured it into a glass. “Here you go. Don’t spill it, ’cause I don’t have much left.” She smiled at me again.
I added her constant smiling to my list of characteristics.
I grabbed the glass with both hands and downed it all in one gulp. I wiped my mouth, satisfied.
“Thanks for the water,” I said.
She nodded and a pause ensued. Clearly, she was not the talkative type. Finally, she asked, “What’s your name?”
“I can’t tell my name to strangers.” I responded immediately.
“Oh, that makes sense.”
“You can call me CF if you want.”
“Are those your initials?”
I froze. They never asked that question. “Um, no. They stand for cool…friend.” I groaned internally. I had just failed.
Amusement sparkled in her eyes. “Okay, CF, I’m Valencia.”
“Nice to meet you Miss Valencia,” I mumbled miserably.
I scanned the room, expecting one of them to pop out of the wall pointing out to a dozen kids all I did wrong. The walls offered up no people.
I scrunched up my face. “Isn’t this a test?” I muttered.
Miss Valencia caught my question. “Is what a test?”
I glared up at her. “You don’t have to keep up the act. We all know that this is a test, and that I failed it. Remember, no names.”
She stares blankly at me.
“Congratulation, you’re a great actress. Now, can we please just get over the humiliation and let me go home?”
“CF, you’re nowhere near home.”
“I told you; you don’t have to pretend anymore. The test is over. Once someone guesses at my identity and gets close, I fail, and the test is over.”
“Um, this isn’t a test. Listen, you’re in a completely different world,” she explained.
I scoffed. “This is a new one. Can I just leave, please? I know what I’ve done wrong, won’t do it again, and would really like to not be made into a lesson.”
“CF,” she said seriously. “You are not where you think you are. You are in a different world. I wish I was joking, but that’s the truth.”
I starde down at the floor. Different world? Why would I be in a different world? How could I be in a different world? I took a deep breath. “So, I’m in a different world.”
She nodded.
“And there’s no way I can go home.”
She nodded again.
“But I’m still not telling you my name.”
“That’s up to you.”
A silence fell. “I like your hair. It looks nice. Most girls I know have one half of their hair chopped short. Actually, all the girls have their hair like that. Anyway, how old are you? And do you like singing?”
Change anything that didn’t fit Valencia 🙂

July 30, 2022 at 7:17 pm #151972lol. lot happened in a short time… whew!!! Just fyi… fire sword breaking through a door, armored man comes through…. Abirami is going to be on high alert! …. meaning watch out! 😉
Grinning from ear to ear, dragging Ku by the hand, ignoring her constant whining and pushback, I led the group into the auditorium with it’s elegant tables and chairs.
“Hi! I hope I didn’t take anyone’s seat. Do any of you know where the waiter is? I’m thirsty.”
I did a double-take. For a second, the boy had looked like Setti…. if Setti were a, what’d they call themselves? Hue-mans? If Setti were a Hue-man, having no wings… and dirty red hair instead of cyan feathers… I imagined the boy in front of me would look just like him.
Something stirred within me, even though I knew he wasn’t Setti… I wanted to go talk to him.
Jade was stretching on the stage, half-hidden by the curtain, by she made eye-contact with me, and I gave her a short head-bob and a look. She seemed confused, but then her eyes glazed over in understanding as I began walking over to the newcomer.
Val reached him first and offered him some water. I stood back some ways, unsure if I should insert myself into their conversation, especially with Ku becoming more and more incensed at my ploys.
“Why’d you drag me in here? I’m not interested in eating or sitting. I want to get out of here, or have you forgotten our mission? We need you to find that Tannink’esh.”
“Ku, if you haven’t noticed yet, we are in a completely different world from Kaphar. There may not be any Tannink’esh’s here. Just… just hold on, okay?”
Ku pouted. “I’m going back to talk to my friend.”
“Uh, um. Fine. Just… stay in the room, okay? I still have a surprise for you.”
She scoffed, tossed one hand in the air and walked away.
Walking up to the side of the table where the boy and Val was talking, I overheard a little of their conversation.
“CF, you’re not where you think you are. You are in a completely different world. I wish I was joking, but that’s the truth.”
The boy, I assumed was named CF, sighed. “So, I’m in a different world?” Even the slight smolder in his eye reminded me of Setti. I wondered if he had a mischievous side, like Setti, too.
Val nodded. I hesitated getting any closer… not sure Val really liked me all that much… but it wasn’t like me to let that stop me…
“But I’m still not telling you my name.”
So CF wasn’t really his name. Why had Val called him CF then?
“That’s up to you,” said Val with a shrug.
“I like your hair,” CF said. I missed my chance to step in. “Most girls I know have one half of their hair chopped short. Actually, all the girls have their hair like that.”
He continued on, but I was curious. He said all the girls where he was from had half their hair chopped short. Did they wear their hair like Ku?
I stepped forward. “Hi, I’m Abirami. I’m from the world of Kaphar. Really, do all the girls from where you are from have Mohawks?
“Um…” CF looked me up and down, as if I was some strange creature.
I looked down and sighed. Of course, I had been in a rush and had left my garb behind the stage. Of course the kid would look at me crazy if a man in nothing but his gaaban (boxers) walked up to him out of the blue. If his world was anything like the other people here, they knew nothing of Aygiff’s.
CF seemed to fixate on my ears for a moment. “Um… not Mohawks. Just half their head is bald. Are you a bouncer, or something? And,” he chuckled, pointing to the side of my face. “Nice make-up.”
“Make-up?” I asked. I hadn’t made anything up, nor had I made anything. So what did he mean make-up?
“Your ears,” he said with a smile, reaching up like he wanted to touch them.
Make-up? My ears? By make up, did he mean fake?
“These aren’t fake,” I said, leaning down. “They’re my real ears.”
CF laughed. “Okay, dude.” But he reached out and touched them, pulling them hard enough for me to pull my head away.
Val backed me up. “He’s really from a different world. I’ve seen him disappear.”
CF laughed. “You mean magic?”
“It’s essence,” I said. “What’s… mah jick?”
CF looked at me with doubt seeping through every pore. “Right.”
Suddenly, a burst of flame broke through the door of the room with a loud bang. Splinters flew in all directions, and a tall man covered in iron walked through the door.
Was it a metal golem? No… I could see movement and fabric. Someone was inside the golem-like apparatus, controlling it. His eyes shone through his nearly completely closed helmet. Still, anyone who didn’t have the were-with-all to use a door knob was probably not friendly.
The behemoth, though not even close to a loxor’s height, flashed his sword around like he was brandying his pride, then sheathed it with a flourish and walked right into Kit and kept moving.
Perhaps not murderous, but certainly a fiend looking for a fight.
My ears bent toward my head, and I took a few steps so CF and Val was behind me, the new intruder in front of me.
I felt Val place a hand on my shoulder.
“I’m sure you can let Kit handle this,” she whispered.
I looked back, looked at her hand, then stared into her eyes.
She let go.
Stepping into the aisle, I jumped and transformed into an aemirok. Even if the intruder was tall, my flying wolf form towered over him like a mother wolf hovering over her pups.
I heard chairs clatter behind me and CF cry out in surprise with a bit of excitement in his voice.

July 30, 2022 at 7:23 pm #151973hope that works. if anything is out of character, feel free to change it. =)
An aemirok is a massive wolf with wings coming out of his back. His claws are like sheaths – the come down to a point, like normal claws, but then double back over the tops of it’s toes like miniature shields. It has a long lion-like tail, and it’s ears are slightly closer together and it’s eyes are cat-like. But it’s visage is unmistakably wolf-like.

July 30, 2022 at 10:23 pm #151976Yeah…I know…I’m wondering if I can get it to the point where Saevus learns that the castle basically has its own powers, and he’ll end up challenging the castle itself lol
Saevus looked at this youngster long and hard. The fact that he looked back and didn’t look down because he couldn’t take anymore was shocking. Saevus had never met anyone like this before. But first things first. He must not crush him, that could come later, when was no longer of use. He must first find out if he was useful…but-
“And what might yours be, young man – I’m sorry, sir?”
A question! Except for asking him about things they didn’t understand, No one but Lord Magus Foedus and General Durun Sollers had asked him questions!
Saevus leaned forward slightly. “I…am…SAEVUS!”
He then held his arms out from his sides and began creating a flaming effect, making it seem like he was surrounded by a wreath of flames. This was also helped with flames coming out of the seams of his armor, creating a terrifying effect.
That last part was really weird to write let me know of a better way to write that please.

But Saevus should be safe, since he is practically 100% covered in metal. And just FYI, the aemirok is not the only creature Abirami can transform into. Abirami can transform into many different creatures, including but not limited to a bear, elephant, wolf, bat, mouse, crayfish, axolotl, boar, elk, skunk, flea, bark spider, etc…. he is also able to tap into those creatures abilities without physically transforming into them…. though it takes up more energy… Ku’Aya, my other character with green skin and tulip like ears can control insects… which is more devious than you might think…. ;). but she will probably stay out of this fight… least for now….)</p>

July 31, 2022 at 12:59 am #151982Lol YES Totally within character, though maybe something more like “I shall make you my slave forever, scum!”
Saevus stared down at the fool who had dared start an argument with him. “I will make you my slave forever, scum!” He roared. He charged past Kit and swung his sword at Abirami. He dodged, and the sword swooshed over him and struck the wall. The section that had been struck exploded outward showering them with rocks and dust. Saevus waved his hand, and the dust cleared away, revealing people scrambling away and staring at him with wide eyes.
Saevus ignored them. He searched and found the upstart who had challenged him, Abirami. He stared at him through the slits in his helmet and readied his sword. Then an idea came to him. He used his craft and summoned a sword, which he had land at Abirami’s feet. After all, he wanted the thrill of the fight that he had not felt in years…a thrill that he had not felt since the battle in which he had killed King Gabor of Pietas.
And also, at this point he was curious. Who was this man that could spray you with ice? Was he capable of more things? It was time to find out…
I will try to keep his destructive powers toned down, but he is a very destructive guy.
July 31, 2022 at 1:27 am #151983And then I realize that Abirami is a wolf, not a human at the moment…
