@everyone just a heads up, these events are visible to everyone in the Castle 🙂

      Basil:

“I think he would if given a proper incentive.  I’m sure you have something he’s been desperately searching for. What was it again? The Core? Was that it? Is that you, Basil? Because it would be a shame for your pesky friend’s search to come to such a swift end, now, wouldn’t it?”

Basils’ eyes widened in horror as a low groan rumbled in the air, as if a great building shifting and buckling under sudden pressure.

      You wouldn’t.

The tunnel swam in his vision as the pressure mounted, filling his ears and compressing his body from all angles.  He gasped, his breathing ragged and torn in the charged air.  The air buzzed and crackled.  Fractals of blinding light tore across the hall like fractured bolts of lightning.  Basil winced as a metallic screech ripped the stale air, rising in an earsplitting shriek as reality fractured around him.  A very human howl of agony suddenly spilled across the hall.

      Basil squinted.  Huh?

      “I SAID LET GO!”

“And I said NOT UNTIL YOU TAKE ME BACK!”

Sasha stumbled out of nowhere, head bent down, Saskia dragging behind.   Her fists were knotted in his long hair, eyes spitting flames.  She grit her teeth and yanked, hard.  Sasha shrieked.  “Letgoletgoletgo – ”

“I’ll let go when we’re back in Spire,” Saskia hissed.

“I MEAN IT!  Please, Skia, YOU’RE HURTING ME!”

“THAT’S KINDA THE POINT, YA BLAZIN’ IDIOT!”

“SILENCE!”  the Castle thundered.  The two froze.  Sasha sighed in relief as Saskia’s hands flew to her holster.

      “What in blazes?”

I didn’t add this part because it would break up the flow, but…

“I MEAN IT! Please, Skia, YOU’RE HURTING ME!”

        Basil frowned.

But I thought only I could call her that…

            @everyone

I’m going to take a few posts to fix up Aydin and kind of get him to a point where he can participate again and then I’m going to drop in Liorah, so that should give everyone enough time to finish the rest of the challenge. (If y’all need more time after that let me know and I can stave her off a while longer!)

Until then, Liorah’s character profile! A bunch of you know her already but for those who don’t:

Name: Her highness Liorah, daughter of Shemaiah, Princess of the Lehabim.

Age: 17 (It’s about 9 months after her first time in the castle)

Appearance: About 5’11”, muscular and boyish. Dark auburn hair past her hips, the ends are sunbleached lighter. Amber eyes, brown skin, and strong features. She’s wearing plain linen clothes and a cloak but a golden circlet with a blue stone on her forehead. Also, lots of weapons. Sling and ammunition around her waist and a curved sword and a dagger.

For anyone who already knows her, the biggest things that have changed since last time is that she looks older and kind of tired and grim. She has recent burn scars all over her hands, wrists, and legs. She has a cut scar on her right arm.

Personality: She’s Liorah. Her personality can be summarized in “Untitled Goose Game” memes. (“If I cannot find trouble I will create it” “It’s a beautiful day in the castle and you are a horrible princess”)

Also she’s absolutely the mom friend and will probably unite forces with Niarok to parent the entire group with exhasperation and agressive kindness.

She theoretically went though character development but I don’t know if it was positive or negative because she might be worse XD

And I found her theme song! It’s just… it suits her so perfectly, just the whole essence of it is just so Liorah. If the books had a theme song it would have to be that. It makes me emotional just listening to it.

            Liorah’s theme

            I’m pretty sure that’s it!

I don’t think you’ve posted a character profile for Saskia yet and a bunch of people here don’t know the Shrike yet!

                  @everyone

Which characters have completed the challenge?

Lemme see, Evie and Quin have, Basil, Yila, Klein, and Aydin refused. As far as I remember, Rúan, Misu, and Niarok haven’t been challenged yet!

                    Aydin

I couldn’t stay here. The castle wasn’t going to stop torturing me and I knew I was going to cry and I didn’t want to do it in front of everyone.

With a flash of light and more screaming than I could process, two people flickered into existence. I rolled my eyes. Ever since I came to this place my hallucinations had taken a turn for the ridiculous.

I got up, trying to ignore the cuts on my back stinging with every movement, and slipped into one of the tunnels. People were talking and screaming and there was so much chaos it made my head spin.

I just needed to be alone. I needed it to be quiet, I needed to be able to think clearly again. Everything there was too bright, too loud, too painful.

The darkness accepted me and it was a little easier to breathe. I had no idea where the tunnel led to and I wasn’t about to find out.

I sat down, wincing again as I felt the blood running down my shoulder and along my back. Or not. Who knew.

I was so tired of this. I was so tired of being scared.

So far from the noise the voices blended together and bounced off the walls until I could barely distinguish them. I thought I could hear Quin’s crying above it.

Memories of fire and blood and the smell of burning surfaced and I shoved them down like my life depended on it.

It wasn’t working. I dug my nails into my palms and tried to swallow the tears that were quickly drowning me. I couldn’t cry, not here, not yet.

It was all too much. I buried my face in my sleeve, trying to muffle the sound. I couldn’t let them hear it. I didn’t want company and I didn’t want sympathy. I’d always managed without it and that would never change.

The sobs made the cuts on my back pull open even further, sending pain shooting through me.

It was happening again and I couldn’t change it. I wouldn’t change it. I’d had the opportunity to make different choices, to rewrite one of the most painful parts of my life, and I had chosen not to. And I would keep choosing that until the day I died.

I would make the world a little easier for someone else. Perhaps one day I could prevent that someone ended up like me.

Without darkness, there is no light. If there was no nighttime, would the stars be as bright?

                      Quin

The girl pulled the knife around behind her.

So I can’t reach it. Quin almost smiled. Don’t worry. I won’t. It wouldn’t do any good anyway. It never does. Nothing ever does.

She knelt down beside him and placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Hey,” she whispered. “I know your brother just died and you hate yourself, but don’t make a bad decision until you’re calm. Trust me, I’ve learned that the hard way.”

He looked at her a long time before he could make himself say what he knew he had to. “Thanks.” He looked into her clear eyes and wondered what she was referencing.

What did you learn the hard way? Not suicide obviously. Or you’d be dead. No, he couldn’t ask. So he just looked at her.

She cleared her throat, as if ready to tell him.  [ @denali-christianson I’m moving on but that’s just b/c I have no idea how Evie will react/what she’ll say. Go ahead and keep the conversation going if you want].

Evie held out her hand. “Want a hand up?”

Quin shook his head. “Thanks anyways.” It felt so good to lay limply on the cold stone floor. A voice split the silence.

“Good choice, Locran.” Quin’s muscles tensed, but it wasn’t the castle’s voice. That voice. Where…

Chills ran up his spine. It can’t be. He risked a glance behind Evie, toward Qatar. Someone had covered the body with a sheet. Quin was grateful, but his heart sank. I knew it couldn’t be him. He’s dead. He tried to block the next thought, but it came anyway. And it was my fault.

But the voice kept talking. It was calm and low, but incredibly audible.

“It was a lie, anyway. It wouldn’t have sent you home, even if you’d complied. That’s the way a liar works.”

The voice rose in volume but kept the same calm. It sounded so much like him.

I’m dreaming again. It’s the castle–

“Let him go, Castle—no, I won’t call you ‘lord’.”

                      Or am I?

There was a rumbling noise, and Locran stumbled forward. “Who are you?” he called. The voice didn’t answer.

                      “Aydin too.”

It’s the Castle. It had taken Qatar’s voice.

“I already complied with your miserable challenge,” Quin yelled, eyes glued to the sheet-covered hump that was his brother’s body.

A metallic laugh. Quin shivered. At least it’s got its own voice back.

“That’s what you think, little one.” Said the castle’s voice.

                      Quin grit his teeth.

“But I’ll allow myself to be ordered around—for now.” It seemed to have lost some of the stony glee.

Quin heard Aydin gasp as if he were suddenly let loose from some horrible memory. He looked around, but Aydin was nowhere to be seen.

“Right.” Qatar’s voice again. “You think that if you want to, you old coward.” Quin closed his eyes.

Coward. Almost the last word he’d ever hear from his brother’s lips. Can’t the castle just let me alone?

Slowly he rolled over until he was facing the direction the voice was coming from. There was a tunnel Quin hadn’t noticed before. In opening stood a man. Tall, fit. His shoulders bent forward, his head at an arrogant tilt.

Quin’s heart raced. It can’t be. It can’t be. It’s another trick of the Castle. It—

The man stepped out of the tunnel, and it instantly vanished. No one spoke as he walked across the cave, straight toward Quin. He stopped a foot away from him, staring down into Quin’s face.

Quin swallowed, hard, as he stared into his brother’s eyes. Just beyond him he could see the sheet-covered body.

Qatar thrust out a hand. “Stand up, Little Brother.”

Quin gripped the hand. It was warm. He pulled himself up and stood, staring into his brother’s eyes.

                      “You’re—”

“Really here.” Qatar smiled. “It was a trick.”

“What about that?” Quin gestured toward the body. Qatar shrugged and spoke to Evie. “Go take the sheet off.”

She advanced toward the sheet and peeled it back gingerly. Underneath was only a pile of stones.

“I guess when you die here you go back to your home for one glorious second, then get thrown back here to await that devil’s pleasure.”

He bent down and picked up Quin’s crutch. “You’ll be needing this.”

Quin swallowed again. How can I tell him?

“You’re a terrible brother, though.” Qatar smirked, but there was more seriousness than jest in his eyes.

                                @calidris

Here’s my new character introductions 🙂  For those who know Sasha from the Villain Castle (looking at you @this-is-not-an-alien) he’s changed drastically since then

                                  Saskia “Skia” X:

Like Basil and Sasha, Saskia was one of many super soldiers developed in Project Goldenseal.  She’s since escaped, and is currently making a living as a mercenary (namely hunting the surveillance androids planted around the city of Spire).  At this point in the story, she’s become tangled up in notorious defector Dr. Vitus Corvo’s resistance cell.  Recently, she’s been tasked as Basil’s unofficial bodyguard and companion…at least during the few instances he’s allowed to go outside.

Appearance: Short (5’3″), but that’s not such a huge deal when you’re biologically engineered (plus it makes people lower their guard).  Pale (but not as much as Basil); medium to dark brown hair (wavy and cut below her chin); very athletic build.  She’s wearing black, tactical clothes, an armored vest, armored gauntlets, armored boots, armored…you get the point lol

Weapons: Lots.  Saskia has a sizable collection of “gadgets” – some of them lethal, some of them not (and many that aren’t particularly lethal, but can theoretically be used that way).  She has more than one gun on her at the moment, plenty of ammo, and two retractable swords.  I’m not entirely sure where they are right now, and neither is she.

Personality: Saskia’s kind of rough, but ultimately kind at heart.  She’s easily annoyed, but not easily angered, which means I don’t even want to know what Sasha did to drive her to *vaguely gestures at the Castle* that.

(I’m pretty sure he tried forcing her to take a time out from their reality for whatever reason, and she decided that if she’s leaving then so is he)

She’s carried over a lot of baggage from Project Goldenseal – including, but not limited to concerning lack of respect for any form of danger (Is it courage?  A complete lack of any will to live?  Sheer stupidity?  You decide!), an iron will and borderline self-destructive tenacity, and a fat crush on Basil.

                                  Also, none of the super soldiers have a last name, so she added the “X” because I she thought it sounded c o o l  a n d  e d g y.

                                  Sasha (aka “The Shrike”)

Sasha became the “poster child” of Project Goldenseal after Dr. Corvo kidnapped Basil.  He was accidentally turned into an alternate reality during a failed experiment (you read that right lol), and is currently planning to completely erase the city of Spire from reality in order to undo the harm caused by Project Goldenseal.  However, he’s nowhere near strong enough to do this (yet), so at this point in the story he’s more of a very powerful and dangerous nuisance (he’ll eventually become a much darker and lethal villain – sort of Saskia’s “final boss”).

Appearance: Tall (around the same height as Basil ~ 6’5″), very long white hair; white, feline eyes; very pale skin (but it doesn’t look that odd considering he’s basically colorless).  He’s wearing a black long coat, black scarf, and black military boots 🙂

                                  Weapons: He doesn’t carry any weapons, but when you’re dealing with a powerful reality bender a n y t h i n g can be turned into a weapon

Personality: Flamboyant, cocky and completely obnoxious (at least at this point in the story).  He’s absolutely convinced that he’s the main character and that he’s going to to get the girl in the end like any good hero (fun fact he and Saskia had an “enemies to lovers” dynamic that lasted all of one week).  He completely exists outside of the rules of reality, so he may or may not break the fourth wall an obnoxious number of times.  He would probably show up fashionably late to his own boss fight.

                                  *laughs as one fey*
