So…
I was a bad guild master and forgot about last week’s theme discussion. Whoops. 😛
Anyhow, this week I’d like to discuss why we shouldshouldn’t evoke shock in readers. It’s an emotion, so it sorta counts. 😉
Now, I am not referring to the sort of shock readers feel after an amazing plot twist. I’m talking about the horror or disbelief that potentially controversial content elicits.
We’ve all experienced this sort of shock as readers. Perhaps a curse word or graphic description made us pause in disbelief. Perhaps we questioned why a writer would add something like that to her novel. Maybe we had to put down the book for a while to process.
What do you guys think about this sort of shock? What does it do to readers? Should we inflict this shock on them? Why or why not? Is there ever a time and place for it? Are their pros and cons to shocking readers? I’d like you guys to think about both sides of the argument. 🙂
