MyClipboardIsMyViolin replied to the topic Anyone Have Some Duct Tape? in the forum Plotting 7 years, 7 months ago
I think the easy solution here is to have some good function of either the melteds or chairs, or have the MC be decieved that there is a good function to the Melteds or Chairs. After all, everyone tells him that the good function exists.
Then your climax is a “reverse tomato” moment in which the MC finds out that all of the melteds and chairs are…[Read more]

MyClipboardIsMyViolin replied to the topic To kill or not to kill, that is the quesion in the forum Plotting 7 years, 7 months ago
I would kill the dad instead. 😛 Him dying to save his daughter would be more poignant than dark.
But I think the whole premise of this topic is flawed. Is this death logically going to happen? Does the evil of the story have a reason to kill the little girl, specifically, or is this an accident? The idea of a writer randomly throwing death into…[Read more]

I recommend What If: Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. Yes, that is a textbook for my creative writing class in college, but money well spent and it really helps, as it takes you through the process of fiction writing in expanded detail. Also, if you’re ever into writing poetry, I consider Poetry 180 by Billy Collins to be essential re…[Read more]

One of the two, though I have forgot which one. I have also read Prophet by the same author. Good stuff.
Unfortunately I only got 25 pages into the first book before the thwaps took it back to the library to evade getting overdue fines. I need to get it back. 😛
Also, Pathfinder series by Orson Scott Card lol, and basically what everyone…[Read more]

@dragongeek An old man traversed the field of tall grass that he picked his way through with his trusty walking staff. The wind blew the grass against his clothes, causing him to complain against the sun, the grass, and the possibility of chigger bites. In the distance, a mountain ridge could be seen, and the old man continued trudging on, hoping…[Read more]

MyClipboardIsMyViolin replied to the topic Advanced Writers in the forum Writing Level & Journey Plans Discussions 7 years, 7 months ago
Right now I’m working on improving my characters and the emotional impact that they have on the reader, and including more descriptions of setting in-text. I tend to ignore my settings and pretend that they aren’t there.
I’m also working on adding more of my advanced spiritual knowledge into my work. Much of my early work isn’t even Christian,…[Read more]

I think the test measures how much pride you have more than anything else. 😛 (That is a joke.)
But yeah, I got advanced too, and I had that reaction. “Do you know how terrible my writing is?” But I think the thing is if you are actually good at writing, you know where your weaknesses are and where your writing needs to be patched up and fixed.…[Read more]

MyClipboardIsMyViolin replied to the topic Traditional vs Self Publishing in the forum Writing Level & Journey Plans Discussions 7 years, 7 months ago
I think the disadvantages for a indie publishing bid is the up-front cost. Some of my research suggests that you have to pay for printing and other marketing expenses, which can run up to $15,000 up-front. While POD companies may allow you to evade that monetary expense, they don’t cut you enough of a profit and you lose money on each book when…[Read more]

@sarah-inkdragon How to make readers like an obnoxious character? Make something even worse than her show up and have her totally overmaster it and blow it into the ground. Nobody likes Tony Stark, but the terrorists are even worse, yeah?
Have her trade snarky insults with the worst of the worst and have her use her brilliance to defeat evil. It…[Read more]

MyClipboardIsMyViolin replied to the topic Dudes, how do I write guys?? in the forum Characters 7 years, 7 months ago
That is an interesting problem. (I’m a girl, though…*headscratch*) I think it has to do with the form of appeal. The gal who wants everyone to get along will appeal to emotion and spend a lot of time talking about common goals. The guy is more likely to storm off and [i]show[/i] everyone why they should work together by attempting to fight a…[Read more]

MyClipboardIsMyViolin replied to the topic Shipping Baby Christians in the forum Characters 7 years, 7 months ago
@anne-of-lothlorien Yes, but in a story not everything has to be “perfect”. Characters make mistakes in stories and they fall short of our wisdom and expectations. The point is to be realistic and honest about what such relationships usually entail. If you’re shipping (marrying) two baby Christians, be honest about the tensions and struggles of…[Read more]

MyClipboardIsMyViolin replied to the topic How can I make this character matter?? in the forum Characters 7 years, 7 months ago
@the-fledgling-artist The easy way to incorporate this character would to make a situation where the other characters need to protect her, since she’s so sickly. Perhaps the evil of this world has an interest in her and would like to kill her or otherwise keep her incapacitated, and her brother feels an obligation to protect her. This could c…[Read more]

Name: Sarah
Genre I usually write in: I really really don’t have one, I’m a genre meets the moment kind of person. I am conversationally familiar with the ins and outs of fantasy, sci-fi, and realistic fiction, enough to write long posts about them and make fantasy jokes.
