I’m going to start off with a disclaimer:
Description of settings is one of my weakest points in writing so we’re all in this boat together.
But here goes. I’m going to give it my best shot.
Description is something that some people love, and some people hate. I’m not sure that there’s any in between. xD The thing is that you have to find the balance between too much description and too little.
With too little the readers will just imagine everything in a blur and they’ll be perpetually confused.
With too much they’ll have a very clear picture of the setting, but will have absolutely no clue what’s actually happening in the story.
As you can see, both options aren’t good. The key is to find the balance: root the action in the setting, so the reader knows where they are, and use the actions to show more glimpses of the setting, but don’t just reel out a massive description.
I honestly don’t think there’s a lot that I can say about this so let’s head right to the activity.

The activity: Describe this setting from your character’s eyes; make sure you include the unique character voice. Use little actions and movements on the character’s part to make it not super boring and “oh wow, it’s a barn” but also make sure you give a clear picture of the setting by utilizing simple, but vivid descriptions!
(Using the barn as a prompt, because it can be almost any genre so should work for most/all of you. 😉 )@inspirewrite
