Daeus Lamb started the topic Building philosophically rich worlds in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 2 months ago
Hey Everyone! This may be our last week on worldbuilding and I wanted to touch on a subject that’s dear to me.
If you listened to our second podcast episode, you heard me argue that Tolkien was a great writer largely because he was a great philosopher. For those of us who invent our own worlds, we have a great opportunity to point to certain…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb started the topic My new research secret in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 2 months ago
I recently made a big breakthrough. As you may know, whether you write speculative or real-world fiction, you need to do research for your story feel authentic and rich.
But… research is hard. Particularly if all you want to read is fiction, like me. 😉
Enter audiobooks. For me at least, audiobooks take almost no commitment to plow through.…[Read more]

ATTENTION!
If you haven’t seen it, I made a post about some changes to the forum and guilds. They’re not that big really and I think they’ll improve everyone’s experience.
On a related note, I’m trying to move everybody to subscribe to new posts in the guild so I don’t have to tag everybody each time I make a post. To do this, go to New Wessex.…[Read more]

Hey, guys. Sorry I’m so late. I made a few suggestions. I hope I’m not too late.
Looks good, @literatureforthelight. I couldn’t have written it better. The only thing I would change is the order, but that’s just my personal interest in non-linear narrative showing through.
I hope we win! (NEW WESSEX…[Read more]

@bama-rose Don’t worry about it. We all learned something new, which is great 😀
@daeus-lamb I’m going to sleep over here, so here is the draft as final as I can get it:Â https://docs.google.com/document/d/12GYU8Kcy0Iv6D6ZFs2E39JjkKOFFFIPC8alipiZfx5s/edit

Hey guys, I’ve just finished going through the draft again. The ending is slightly different, and a bit about the bracelet has been moved to the beginning, so if you want to check it out and see what you think?

Does anybody know where to put en dashes, em dashes and hyphens? And does it matter? I’m having trouble understanding it when I research it….

Hey guys, I’m sorry I didn’t get too much done today, but I’m hoping to go over the whole thing a second time and tighten up the wording in the next couple of days. If there’s any place you were confused, you think we could put in more/less information, or anything, please go ahead and comment, and even use the suggesting tool to directly edit the…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb started the topic Taboos in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 3 months ago
I’ve been thinking recently about something that’s never caught my attention before. Taboos. If I could only ask one question about a culture to learn about it, I’m tempted to think I’d ask about its taboos.
Taboos could keep a whole nation in slavery (for instance, if they think it brings bad luck to question their priests).
Or taboos can…[Read more]

Sorry for being off for so long. Yesterday, I couldn’t access the forum thread (or any forum thread) but it seems to be back on today. I went ahead and did some prewriting, though.
So what I have right now is a story about a figure skater, who’s story has been about switching coaches and working his way through all the new struggles to finally l…[Read more]

Where is everybody? We need to get going on this.
I would love to write this, but I’m not sure if I’ll have the time. I need to write a blog post, and I need to work on my WIP.
So, what if we take the villain learning to be the hero, and we…[Read more]

@msqueen8 @eden-anderson  Thanks!
@kate  You haven’t seen them!? You have to at least see Sabrina. Inception has a little too much cussing and violence for me to be wholehearted in my recommendation, but Sabrina is good. Seriously, go watch it. XD

I had a great idea that was totally not inspired by my latest blog post on backstory. XD

I think it’s important to remember that there’s a difference between a happy ending and a perfect ending. In my opinion it’s the perfect endings that are cliché, while the happy endings can actually be really satisfying. While a story might end with the characters hurting and darkness and evil still existing, the story can still end happy.

Whoa, I love this prompt. It could go so many different ways… honestly, the first thing that popped in my head (though I have no idea why) is a story about a little(ish) boy who’s sitting inside a safe room while the world is ending outside but he’s happy because he has an ice cream cone. XD
I agree with @eden-anderson though; I find it a…[Read more]

Pretty much what Germaine was discribeing, the unexpected endings. Pixar has a lot of these, you go into the movie thinking you know how this is going to end yet they manage to turn this on its head while still making it a happy ending. Think of Toy Story 3, none of the toys go with thier beloved Andy to collage, instead they find a…[Read more] -

Prompt wars are back. Tada!
As a refresher, we have two weeks to come up with a submission. Word limit is 2,500.
This war’s prompt has got me terrified. The prompt?
Write a non-cliché happy ending.
How do you write happy endings? 😮 😮 😮 And how do you make them non-cliché?
I guess this will be instructional for me. 😀
