Daeus Lamb started the topic Ethryndal Day in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 5 months ago
Hey guys,
It’s me. Normally, each week we focus on our theme topic — which right now is worldbuilding.
Today though, we’re going to do something different. We’re going to try, the last week of every month, to focus on one of our guild members. I’ve decided to work down the list on our guild page, so today we have our snarky elf, @ethryndal.
How…[Read more]

Sorry I’m late. This week’s word count for Good or Evil: 3,845. I think that’s a record
And I finished the story!
Word count for the finished story as of yet is: 14,627.
I’m still going to work on adding scenes and editing this next week, though. And I’ll try and post what I’ve got Friday evening.
Thank you all for your support and…[Read more]

@kate @germaine-han @chalice @sesi @gabbyj Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement. I guess the only reason I hesitate is because it kind of feels like cheating. Right now I’m only two or three days from writing the end of the story. At the most. :-j That’s not cheating, is it?
@sesi Yeah, I’ll probably get two or three soundtrack CDs.…[Read more]

Dear Saxon Scribe,
Imagine you’re a Viking or one of those other early explorers of America. Since you were five, your grizzly uncle has told you stories about the time his vessel was blown off course and he spied afar off a coastland peeking through the mists.
Now, twenty years older, you sit on the prow of your boat and a wild country…[Read more]

Just watched this video and thought it would be good to share it here.
It’s in a playlist about composing music, but I think this video is applicable to any creative process.
So, how do you guys “get in the way of inspiration”?

Total word count for the entire story is up to 11,589.
I think I’m going to buy myself something if I finish the story by the end of the month. What do you guys think, good…[Read more]

I have some characters I’d like to have drawn. They’re all from my WIP set in the mountains of Kentucky during the 1930’s.
Charlotte; she’s about 18, she has green eyes and light brown hair that goes down to about the middle of her back, and she sometimes wears it in a loose braid. And she usually wears a plain white short sleeved shirt with…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb started the topic The awful dilemma: how to explain your story world in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 6 months ago
Hey Saxon Scribes,
To be honest, this post is more about me learning from you all then offering any great wisdom. When you have a complex story world, anything from a fantasy world or ancient Persia, you’ve probably faced this huge dilemma.
On the one hand, readers could be extremely confused (maybe they’ll even completely misinterpret what is…[Read more]

Well guys, I really appreciate all this feedback. It looks like the three main topics everyone wants to hear about are theme, plot, and worldbuilding but worldbuilding got the most votes by a small margin. I’m thinking that’s what we’ll go with.
For those of you who write historical fiction, don’t worry! Yes, I’ll probably cover some aspects of…[Read more]

Alright, here’s this week’s word count for Good or Evil: 2,926 words added.
And the entire word count for Good or Evil rewrite is now up to 8,504 words. For those of you who were wondering. That’s almost three thousand words more than the original short story. I would guess I’m about half way through. We’ll see.
Thanks for all y’all’s su…[Read more]

Noah Litle started the topic Name That City! in the forum New Wessex Writing Discussions 7 years, 6 months ago
Hey, guys!
I need some ideas. I have a city that needs a name.
So, the city is a kind of modern (think early 1900s) city, but with an ancient roman/middle eastern twist. That basically means they have an arena for ancient roman style games and an open marketplace squeezed between industrial brick.
Fire away!
Hit me.
I’m open to any…[Read more]

Hey Saxon Scribes,
For something like six months now, we’ve studied character development every week. It’s been a good journey, but now I’m coming to the point where I don’t have a whole lot more to discuss. If anything else comes to mind, I’ll make a topic out of it, but if nothing comes to me, next week I think we could start on something…[Read more]

Alright guys. This week’s word count for Good or Evil: 3,229 words.
I wrote the most words on Tuesday with 877 words. Mostly because of the word war. I usually write a little more than 300 words in a day.
And just for good measure, the total word count for the month of October: 5,824 words.
Yeah, I didn’t write very much this past month. But…[Read more]

@noahlitle Ah, right. We were third. VERY close to being second.
@gabbyj @kate Rewriting/editing can count partially. Our rule is that writing new scenes and new poetry counts 100% while with rewriting/editing, you subtract your former word count from your final word count to get the total — if it ends up negative you don’t need to count it.

Guys, this is crazy. A little sad. Absolutely awesome.
The word war. How’d we do?
We actually beat the record from past guild wars! I was amazed. We had 51,082 — a whole novel’s worth in a week.
So, the winner?
……
With 72,127 words, it goes to Parimi Alca. I’m super impressed with those guys, especially since I’ve heard they’re the…[Read more]

Hey Saxon Scribes. I think I missed last week somehow, but thankfully I remembered just in time today.
Let’s talk about relational development. Just like the meaning we bring to the world is often found in our relationships, usually the best character development is actually relational development between one character and another.
Today, it t…[Read more]
