Inciting and Key Events
The Inciting Event sets the story in motion. For example, Bingley’s and Darcy’s arrival at Netherfield in Pride and Prejudice.
The Key Event is what the story is about. For example, when Lizzy meets, and is rejected by, Darcy.
These are two events that the first fourth of the story hinges around. Sometimes they will happen at the same time (i.e. going through the painting and joining Prince Caspian in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) or separated (i.e. arrival at prison camp and digging of tunnels in The Great Escape).
First Plot Point
And now we come to the first plot point. This is the part of the story where everything changes. The first plot point happens around the 25% mark of the story. This plot point doesn’t have to happen to the main character, but it does need to force them to react.
For example, in Pride and Prejudice, the first plot point is when Bingley is convinced by his friends to leave for London. After Jane and Bingley have fallen in love, Lizzie and Jane are forced to react to this change.
Do you know what your inciting and key events and first plot point are? Feel free to share them if you’d like.
