Avensers Assemble!
This lesson is going to be a quick one because I don’t have a lot of time today, but I also don’t think it needs a ton of explanation.
Open with the first dramatic event
Finding this event will help you figure out the first domino in your story’s line of dominoes that just keep getting knocked down until the last one at the climax. This domino/event can take place years before the story proper and would then be backstory, but most of the time it will be as part of the beginning scene.
There should be action, but not so much that it keeps us from getting to know the character. And just because it is action, doesn’t mean it needs to be a fist fight, battle or something like that. As long as your character is doing something.
The first dramatic event is also where you will be presenting the dramatic question. The beginning asks this question and the end answers it.
For example, Pride and Prejudice asks: What is necessary for a good marriage? And the end answers with: Wisdom and romantic love.
What are some of your favorite opening scenes in books? How do you plan to apply this to your book?
