So the ending didn’t satisfy me, but it did seem … lifelike?
I’ve known people like Matt. I and some of my friends have dated people like Matt. The real-life arc for those stories is just as meh in the end as Fabry’s, so it felt very true, but not incredibly meaningful. In fiction there’s an opportunity to do better that I wish Fabry had taken…[Read more]

I agree with you guys. The only thing I’d add is that I really appreciated the pacing of the characters’ spiritual growth. St. Paul kind of conversions happen of course, but the everyday way that Matt, his dad, Jesse, and even Earl, are slowly drawn closer to God and begin to see His plans is a lot closer to my friends’ and my…[Read more]

@beth20 The guidelines that @corkybookworm shared for differentiating between Middle Grade and YA are pretty universal across several sources, so I’d agree with that. For everyone mentioning Ranger’s Apprentice, that series is riding the line between the two. Technically it’s considered high Middle Grade/low YA, and even a lot of libraries don’t…[Read more]

@seekjustice I read a New York Times article by Brit Marling that really shed some light on realistic female characters. There’s a lot of great advice and things to consider in here. Good luck!

Hey! I read ahead a little, but I want the stuff we’re talking about here to be fresh in my mind, so I didn’t go too far lol.
Matt, Jesse, and Dickie do have an interesting relationship. Matt genuinely became friends with them and is attracted to Jesse from the start, but because everyone around him looks down on them that mindset rubs off on…[Read more]

@taylorclogston Only that it’s written from Matt’s view, knowing what he knows, and not from a more omniscient author perspective.

How does Chris Fabry show what the story is about so thoroughly right from the start? How can we learn from this?
The tone from the start was one of remembering, living in the past, and a quiet dissatisfaction. Because it was so retrospective I actually had a little trouble figuring out what was going on at first, but as the story went on that…[Read more]

@naiya-dyani that’s great! I saw you recruiting a new member for the Iron Project maybe? I’m really happy for you guys 😀
We got settled in just in time to be stuck in our house with this whole COVID-19 thing lol. How are you all doing with that?

@urwen-starial Thanks for sharing this! It puts into words what I, and I’m sure a lot of other people going through COVID-19-related social distancing, am/are feeling right now too. The emotions expressed here are raw and real, and help me see that I’m not alone.
The meter could be tighter, if you’re looking to improve on it. I loved the imagery!…[Read more]

Hi @michael-erasmus 😀
Programming sounds difficult, but cool 🙂 What languages do you work in primarily?
I love trying different cultures’ food. What’s your favorite South African dish?
Do you have a story you’re working on now? I don’t write much fantasy or sci-fi, mostly historical or contemporary fiction, but I’m trying to read a little…[Read more]

@taylorclogston sure! I went into Docs and left a few suggestions. While there I realized the misspellings weren’t yours, so I apologize for saying that. I really loved your style of telling the story, and I hope you don’t change it too much 😀 Good luck!
