Okay, guys! Time for a discussion!
Recently, I’ve been juggling a novella challenge and the 100 for 100 challenge. I kind of left the novella challenge by the wayside, but not before writing around 23,000 words for one draft and 4-5 for another in a different pov. I also thought this would be a good chance to try my hand at first person, since my previous experience is pretty limited. However, I’m kind of stumped and it’s brought to my attention an issue in my writing. I have a serious lack of syntax variety!
So, how do you guys structure sentences? Do your sentences follow any patterns? Are there two or three different structures you kind of rotate between like me? How did you learn about different structures and do you have any resources you can recommend? I’ve noticed, especially in the first person, that my syntax has been very limited and repetitive. Have y’all noticed anything like that in your own writing, patterns you follow or difficulties with syntax? Do you think first person limits your options for variations or is this just something I’ve fallen into? At what point do you guys concern yourselves with syntax in your writing process?
Revive Rillumen! 😀
