Character introductions are very important in a book. What kinds of things do we need to remember when we are working on the beginning of our WIPs? K.M. Weiland has a few in her book, Structuring Your Novel that I’m going to share with you today.
- Compile all necessary components of your story in the first act. Anything that is mentioned later in the book, needs to be introduced at the beginning.
- Both the protagonist and antagonist should be introduced in the first act as well as the love interest, sidekick, and mentor (if you have any of these).
- How many characters should I have? Only those who will play a part in the climactic scenes
- What about naming characters? How do I (and the readers) keep all the names straight? One simple way to do this is to avoid names that sound similar. An example from what I did to myself: Micah and Miles. They both have names that start with “Mi” and are five letters long. Names that start with the same letter and are the same length should be avoided.
What are some areas you are strong in? Which ones are you weaker in and want to change in your current WIP?
