Hey Ereki!
We’re moving along with our annual theme of conflict and will be focusing more on external conflict for a while now. If you’re new to Erekdale, you’re welcome to go back and read through all the previous topics on internal conflict. But now… onward to external conflict!
We often think of external conflict first when crafting a story, as that’s what readers are going to clearly see as they read. But as we’ve discussed before, most all external conflict is a reflection of the protagonist’s internal conflict, especially the overall story conflict. If this is the first time some of you have heard the term, story conflict is most broadly defined as what’s stopping the protagonist from achieving his/her overall goal.
This week’s exercise is to identify the story conflict in two books/movies of your choice and explain why you think they worked so well.
If you need an example, in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, the story conflict is about the Pevensie children freeing Narnia from the White Witch. There are probably various takes on why that’s such a great conflict, but I felt it was an allegorical representation of us as Christians overcoming evil, and that gave the story conflict power and depth.
Just let me know if you have any questions 🙂 I can’t wait to see your results!
