@dakota – Beautiful!
I am not a cold weather person, but your poem puts me in the mood for all the great things of fall.
=) I love your style.

@sarah-inkdragon – I apologize! I forgot to respond to your comments.
It is so true that we have to follow our God-given gifts and convictions before engaging deeply in these topics. We have to know not only what we believe, but WHY we believe it. It took me a lot of research and study to solidify what I believe, and my beliefs only got fi…[Read more]

I’m starting to see a theme… Our reluctance to address these topics appears to stem from a reluctance to leave the perceived safety of our evangelical friends/community to actually engage with people we are supposed to be evangelizing. =)
Can you define what you mean by ‘hard limits?’
As a Christian, I believe we must all r…[Read more]

This is exactly what I’ve found to be true. A book written for the Christian church, from the POV of a non-Christian of ANY kind, is not well received. Which I don’t truly understand, and find this is part of the reason the Church and – to keep with our topic – the reason Christian fiction feels mostly irrelevant or out of touch with the rest of…[Read more]

@karthmin – I wanted to take some time to think through your response before writing my own. Obviously, based on my shorter response, I completely agree with you, but there is a LOT of meat here, and I wanted to take it a bite at a time.
I honestly never thought about the expectation of Christian Fiction being suitable for children, but you…[Read more]

@karthmin – I am pretty much speechless. In the best possible way. =)
That. All of it.
Thank you for wording it so perfectly. I wouldn’t attempt to add a thing.
I was starting to think I was the only one, and that is what I was praying I would find here at SE.
Thank you, sir. I give you the highest of salutes. (And, I humbly request to be…[Read more]

Thank you, everyone. Your answers are in line with what I’ve gotten in other forums. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I have a slightly different angle on these topics. Not in a way that contradicts what the Bible says, but much differently than most of the Christian church does.
I appreciate everyone’s…[Read more]

It would/does require a lot of research to write about these things. Mostly to avoid perpetuating stereotypes or misinformation. =) Nine years should give you plenty of time. =)

@hope-ann – Help me understand what you mean by ‘straw man.’ I have never heard that term before.
I think you and @daeus-lamb nailed the reason on the head. In general, Christians as a whole don’t want to or don’t know how to engage with these topics. And those of us who do engage must be careful not to allow the world’s vi…[Read more]

I have read, and on occasion, do read books that contain sexually explicit scenes. There was a period of my life when erotica was my preferred genre. And many of the novels I read were outstanding writing! That being said, I interpreted the statement that classified those scenes in Christian novels as ‘lazy writing,’ had nothing to do with the…[Read more]

I am curious what the SE forum crew think about handling controversial subjects. The recent blog series did an excellent job of providing a frame work for how and when to (or not to) use CONTENT like violence, swearing, and sex. I gained a lot and found I completely agreed with the authors of the articles.
Abuse, alcohol, pre- and extra- marital…[Read more]

I like the sound of conpathic. I think I can make that work. They would be noted as able to “influence the others to feel with them.” Yeah. I like that a lot.
I’ll credit you if it makes it past my editor. =)

In my fantasy world, it is growing apparent that at least some of the people are empathic or have empathic-like abilities.
This is consistent with the way I have built their species, and fits with their culture.
However, I have discovered that there are two types:
1) The commonly understood empath who senses and reacts/responds to the emotions…[Read more]

I find it interesting that this is such a heated topic in Christian writing. I agree with the conclusion of the article itself.
I try very hard NOT to use swear words in my writing, and I work hard to find options around it, until doing so would be disingenuous to the character and/or the story. Using “He cursed.” or “She swore.” works 99% of…[Read more]

@scarletimmortalized this is a fun world building exercise!
As the one oddball female who doesn’t particularly care for chocolate, the loss of HOT chocolate would be no biggie. =)
However, though there is no FIRE, there can still be sources of heat. Off the top of my head…
