Welcome! I remember you from the Stories and Fantasies topic 😉
My character is Rupert Greeves from N. D. Wilson’s The Ashtown Burials book series, taken from page 253 of book 2 (The Drowned Vault). At least I’m pretty sure it was page 253. *shrugs* Whatever. You may wanna read my *cough rough cough* summary of Rupe’s…[Read more]

So, after the first characters entered the castle, they encountered Macha, the Owl Witch from Irish legend/the movie Song of the Sea. She uses her magical jars to suck out people’s energy, I guess? (normally she steals their emotions and turns them to stone, but magic works a little differently in the castle).
Now the c…[Read more]

I’m sorry this is so late, but thank you so much for all of your recommendations and non-recommendations! XD Erynne, I have The Witch of Blackbird Pond on my reading list. It’s wonderful to know it contains no witchcraft. XD Some of my other friends like it as well! MelancholicWriter, I’ve just finished…[Read more]

I’m glad to assist if you need help when you get to your sci-fi project, what are you working on right now?
Do you have any ideas for a sci-fi?
My project (titled Ice) is in the revision stage, almost done (I may call it for now so I’m not endlessly editing). It is about a criminal named Jade who is haunted by his past and…[Read more]

Yes, kombucha is delicious! We actually brew it ourselves and put peach juice in it, it’s delightful.
What genres do you dabble in?

Lol thanks XD. I found two names with villain-meanings (who knew searching ‘evil names with meanings’ ‘villain names with meanings’ etc would come up with such crazy stuff like super-villain names that are just like ‘Black…Dark…uh…Blackness’ like dude don’t they know we have writers who want complex and unpronounceable nam…[Read more] -

Okay, critique. Um, you never mentioned where the main character and the other guy are, or what the main character’s name is, or anything for readers to go on. Do you get into that later, since this is a…[Read more]

Yes, it is for posting stories you’re writing / have written. And as far as I’m aware, it’s for everyone; not just people from The Flabbit Room (aka the WFS’s young writer’s forum branch).

Like others have said, I like to think about the fantasy culture and get inspired from the real-world. I like to modify or make up new names that have a similar feeling to real-world names. For example, I’m pretty familiar with Greek and Latin names. I altered “Antigone” to “Antione” or “Tione”, that kind of thing. Meghan…[Read more]

So, last time I did one of these, I got completely overwhelemed trying to critique everyone’s stories. So this go-round, if y’all are okay with it, I’ll just pick two or three to follow so that I can critique those as well as I can instead of giving you hasty and probably inaccurate ideas. Sorry if that hurts someone’s feelings. :/ I think I’m…[Read more]

Hi!
I often experiment with what letter combinations that I like best (for example, fj, ae, ai, ey) and use those frequently when creating names.
Another neat trick to use on occasion is reversing words. One of my characters was at one point an arsonist, and her name is Tsinorsra (arsonist backward). Not all readers will…[Read more]

@melancholicwriter All of those are really good advice.
I was going to say something, but then I realized that I don’t have a method for coming up with names…I just make them up. *shrugs* (Or I ask my siblings for ideas😆)
Don’t stress about coming up with the perfect name the first time. Sometimes it will take weeks or even months. I had a…[Read more]

@melancholicwriter, to boil it down to the bones, a romance story is about two people either drawing closer together, or falling apart. In other words, the love relationship is the driving force of the story.
I may be wrong, but it sounds like the driving force of your story is not so much the relationship between the girl and the boyfriend who…[Read more]

My usual strategy is to take names from whatever real culture I’m using as inspiration and occasionally making up things that fit with those names. Or to look up the definition of the word I want the name to mean and use either synonyms or a root of the word (usually for place names). Ost Tarn is the name of an observatory o…[Read more]

@melancholicwriter – I usually go to Google translate and translate a bunch of words (relating to whatever I’m trying to name) into several languages. Then, I have a nice list and stick words together or tweak them until it sounds nice and, preferably, fairly pronounceable. The languages I pick often correlate to the cultures that I draw…[Read more]
