I experimented with horror, and though I like the genre it’s hard (for me at least) to keep from putting unnecessary gore into my work. The plot of my horror story is fine, but while writing it I got caught up in the excitement and did a gore-overload. Does anyone else have a similar problem when writing horror?

@pensword, @phoenix, @sam-m, So there’s an entire website devoted to H.P. Lovecraft; since most if not all his works are old enough to be in the public domain, his stuff is available for free reading. He is kind of the progenitor of cosmic horror, so if you’re into writing about terrors which transcend human comprehension and absolutely dwarf our…[Read more]

I actually haven’t read much horror either, besides classic horror. Frankenstein and Dracula are both good, and there’s a super short second vampire novel called Carmilla that was interesting. I think the only modern horror I’ve read was a book called Prodigal Son which is part of a Frankenstein retelling series sort of thing by a guy…[Read more]

@pensword So, the WIP I just finished the first full draft of yesterday (hurray!) kind of has horror elements to it. I mean, the broader novel it’s set in definitely skews much towards historical fantasy than horror, but its magical elements are much less “whimsical fantasy” and more on the side of “what would it actually be like if someone could…[Read more]

@pensword I have yet to write an actual horror story, but I had an idea for one I might do sometime -it’s basically a reverse Carrie story. So, in Carrie by Stephen King, a group of people are cruel to the protagonist, and then Carrie tries to get revenge on them and things go wretchedly awry (or that’s my understanding of it…I, uh, haven’t…[Read more]

My story is like Gotham (and many, many other Batman stories) meets The Naturals -but cleaner and not as creepy as those…although, it’s actually still kind of creepy and I’m working on trying to adjust that…
Does anyone else struggle to form villains that are realistic and wicked, but not so dark that you’ll give your readers nightmares? Any tips?

What are your thoughts on the use of flashbacks to provide important information? Should they be avoided at all costs? Or can they be applied practically?
-
I used them heavily in my story, but I structured the story so it was expected. Each chapter began with a flashback of some sort that related in some way to what would happen in the upcoming chapter. None of the people who read the first draft for me had any complaints about it, and I have seen published novels use a similar structure. If it’s…[Read more]

A good mystery is a good mystery, so where there’s one to be found I’m always there. π
I’ll admit, I haven’t read many of the books… I got sort of sidetracked with Sanderson. I like all the the Robert Downey Jr. movies however(though, slight content warning on those – nothing too crude if I remember correctly but some language), and I love the…[Read more]

@pensword Oh, awesome! Yeah, I’ve heard good things about the Basil Rathbone Holmes movies. π I should check them out sometime!

Someone’s gotta start something. Anyone here have a horror story they’re currently writing? Or an idea that’s saved for later?
Any good horror books you’d suggest? I read several Ted Dekkers a while ago, but he managed to alienate me enough that I’m leery to read anything else by him.

Two is hard. I always say that my mystery WIP is most likeΒ The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (NOT an endorsement), but a combination, hm. Probably the above with a dash of Jack Reacher.

I’ve read the entire series of books/short stories at least once. Some stories I’ve read multiple times. I’ve also enjoyed several of the old Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movies, and I’m a fan of the show. I haven’t seen the RDJ movies though.
