I experimented with horror, and though I like the genre it’s hard (for me at least) to keep from putting unnecessary gore into my work. The plot of my horror story is fine, but while writing it I got caught up in the excitement and did a gore-overload. Does anyone else have a similar problem when writing horror?

I actually haven’t read much horror either, besides classic horror. Frankenstein and Dracula are both good, and there’s a super short second vampire novel called Carmilla that was interesting. My story is like Gotham (and many, many other Batman stories) meets The Naturals -but cleaner and not as creepy as those…although, it’s actually still kind of creepy and I’m working on trying to adjust that…

Does anyone else struggle to form villains that are realistic and wicked, but not so dark that you’ll give your readers nightmares? Any tips?

Two is hard. I always say that my mystery WIP is most like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (NOT an endorsement), but a combination, hm. Probably the above with a dash of Jack Reacher.

I’ve read the entire series of books/short stories at least once. Some stories I’ve read multiple times. I’ve also enjoyed several of the old Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce movies, and I’m a fan of the show. I haven’t seen the RDJ movies though.
