Hey, since this group is new, I want to know what y’all are writing. If you could describe your WIP by merging the concepts of two existing mysteries (i.e. “My novel is North by Northwest meets Doctor Who—I know, neither of which is a novel), what would they be?

February 7, 2020 at 9:56 pm #105589Laurel@law0413Hello!
I’m back from having dropped off the earth from a while and haven’t been doing a ton of writing but I have a work in progress that’s sort of Homeward Bound meets psychological thriller without the animals. I’ve been rather uninspired lately, honestly—how do you all keep motivated? For context, I’m a college student with too much free time and too little motivation haha.I say I won’t buy any more books until I’ve finished the ones I have, and then I laugh at myself.

@joshuapior Good question! Hmmmm… I guess it would be Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (wings) meets Chronicles of Narnia (battles and good sides/bad sides and such)? Or Maximum Ride (wings) meets quality. 😏 *glares at the movie that TOTALLY could’ve been better*Grammar Geek | Steampunk Enthusiast | Published Author | Winged Warrior | Avatar by RedPhoenix15
February 11, 2020 at 1:02 pm #105848caffeinated_hipster0218@caffeinated_hipster0218I guess I’ll go! I would say mine is a combination of Dead Poet’s Society and End of the ******* World. Though it’s completely clean, it’s a story about two kids running away from a very facade-esque town to grow and experience the real world, but as the story goes on we find about a deep root of abuse and hurt in one of the character’s lives.

February 15, 2020 at 5:46 pm #106257PenSword@penswordTwo is hard. I always say that my mystery WIP is most like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (NOT an endorsement), but a combination, hm. Probably the above with a dash of Jack Reacher.

February 20, 2020 at 5:20 pm #106784Sam M@sam-mMy story is like Gotham (and many, many other Batman stories) meets The Naturals -but cleaner and not as creepy as those…although, it’s actually still kind of creepy and I’m working on trying to adjust that…
Does anyone else struggle to form villains that are realistic and wicked, but not so dark that you’ll give your readers nightmares? Any tips?
March 8, 2020 at 8:09 pm #108414Livi Ryddle@anne_the_noob14Oh gosh. I have read very few mysteries XD Like, literally the only mysteries I’ve read are Sherlock Holmes lol. Oh. Actually I take that back. Is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde a mystery? Cause I’ve read that. And if any of Edgar Allen Poe’s works are mysteries, I’ve read them.
I shall do my best, though! Let’s see. Oh gee. I’m gonna have to use other things besides mysteries and even books… Think Monsters Inc. meets the Grim Reaper and vampire aesthetics. Ish…? *laughs* That’s the best I can do.

March 11, 2020 at 3:14 pm #108663Dashuri Halad@christloverMine is something like “Groundhog Day/ Happy Death Day.
Basically there is a super hero who’s power makes it so that when he dies he will restart the day. The super hero, however, is not allowed to change anything that they do. They simply have to hope that the people around them will notice irregularities and realize what happened, thus changing how they die. They also only have 20 times that they will revive. After that, they cease to exist.
My protagonist is part of a team of super heroes that includes the one mentioned above. They notice that their friend looks super anxious and that their movement are also rehearsed. They recognize that something has gone wrong, and probably multiple times. They have to figure out where things go downhill and how to fix it, but they can’t ask their friend or the friend will automatically die due to limitations placed on his powers by the being that gives out powers.
