@kate ohhhh. *facedesk* That makes more sense. I guess I’m too used to The Lunar Chronicles as my sci-fi. XP Yeah, I didn’t really catch the part that her blood changes color, but I think it’s awesome! Like @bama-rose said, I think you could definitely make it apparent, even in a short story.

Ooh, I like the idea of their blood changing colour with emotions. Even though the story is short, I think you could fit that in there without info dumping. When I read that part, I didn’t realize why she was hiding her arms, and when you said her blood was orange, I thought that was the natural colour for them.
But yeah, I think it’d be a…[Read more]

@kate LOVE this!! Great job! đ *claps* I agree that it does seem a little slow in the beginning. A lot of description–which was cool, but it also slowed the story down a bit. Also, are the characters androids? Or are they human? Do they need oxygen? Do they rust in water? I just had a thought about all that because I assumed she was an android…[Read more]

@kate This is gorgeous! The worldbuilding is vivid, mystical, and with a very cool blend of fantasy and technology. The simplicity of the fish as light also stood out to me. Good job!
I’d guess the big thing here for me is structure. You’ve written it with a fairly slow beginning, with a lot of description and internal monologue. It really…[Read more]

Ok my mistake, you did mention tech briefly. But it wasnât as obvious because it was so seamless with all the other beautifully fantastical prose, haha! I still would like to see Vasha interact with a different piece of tech.
Perhaps there could be some kind of cool fish tank, filled with the goldfish. Vasha could think of them as pitiful t…[Read more]

ok first of all it was BEAUTIFULLY written! You have a gorgeous imagination. I loved the way Vasha thought back and forth and doubted. Now on to suggestions.
I think you should introduce the âtechâ element of the world sooner. Maybe with a different piece of tech. It was so fantasy right up until the words âoxygen generatorâ.
I also th…[Read more]

@piperbee whoops, didnât see yours! Love those ideas, especially the fish relating to the MCâs struggle. Iâm not sure if it should be their first attempt or not. Iâm sure theyâve been suicidal for a while, but the question is if theyâve ever attempted before. If theyâve attempted, people might be worried about them and be suspicious of them going…[Read more]

@kate I agree that it would probably make the story too large. đ what is the word limit anyway? And go ahead and crank out the first draft! While I would love to write it, Iâm still working on my story for the SE contest XP

@corissa @cassandraia@literatureforthelight @eden-anderson @kate
here are some ideas/suggestions! No need to use them, but hopefully thereâs some inspiration for those of you writing.
– The little, ordinary fish should do something that relates to the MCâs inner struggle. Escaping a tangle of kelp. Popping back out of a larger fishâs mouth…[Read more]

Echoing @corissa, let’s make sure what we end up with is the strongest way we could write the prompt. There are so many great ideas here though, so keep it up!
@kate @cassandra If we’re not sure who’s drafting, we have had two people do separate drafts, just to get started. I don’t have a laptop at the moment, so I’m mostly going to be around…[Read more]

I think this is all wonderful.
To do some brainstorming, I think that first person will be the easiest by far. If we did it from third person, it would be difficult to get as close to the raw emotion and pain of it all. It could technically be done, but I think first person would be much more…[Read more]

Okay, yeah, this is far too intense and complicated for my poor, little cranium…

@kate I love that idea! And I think it will be pretty unique. I think most people on this site tend to go for no-tech fantasy (usually medieval), so we can switch things up. How in depth does this religion need to be? How are we taking it? Is it legalistic, sucking the joy and beauty out of life? Or is it more focused on something else? Idk,…[Read more]

@kate that’s true. Hm…so are we doing a fantasy world, then, with a false god and priest/priestess? But then also scuba gear? What kind of tech are we talking?
-
Cassandra Hamm replied to the topic A small jewel in a sea of chaos in the forum Announcements 6 years, 11 months ago
@kate thank you!! But wait…if they lost hope that there was beauty in the world, why did they take their gear? Why wouldn’t they just drown? Rather than swimming down and seeing something beautiful at their last moments.

I think this sounds awesome, guys! Ahhh I would love to write this story but am not sure I’ll have time…. When is it due? Also, this scuba diver dove in to find death–but they took their gear, which would prolong their life. Does that mean that they essentially wanted the last thing they saw (when they ran out of oxygen) to be something…[Read more]

@kate I really like the idea of combining the kelp forest idea with the depression/suicidal thoughts one. Maybe he/she loses hope that there’s any beauty left in the world…IDK. I really bad at coming up with thoughts on the spur of the moment. I’m sorry guys…🤦♀️
Oh, and I think the magic idea is cool too.
