here are some ideas/suggestions! No need to use them, but hopefully there’s some inspiration for those of you writing.
– The little, ordinary fish should do something that relates to the MC’s inner struggle. Escaping a tangle of kelp. Popping back out of a larger fish’s mouth. Or maybe it becomes a “fish out of water” and the MC has to rescue it. I like the last idea if the MC’s backstory involves them feeling out of place.
– Speaking of backstory, what is the MC’s backstory. It doesn’t have to be mentioned in detail, but the answers should be under the surface (haha, pun!) is this their first attempt or one of many? Are they lonely? What about family/friends? What are they leaving behind? What would the world be like without them and why are they believing the lie that it would be better without them (or it’s not fixable enough to stay)?
– Also, I’m totally ok with a sci-fi fantasy setting, as long as it doesn’t detract from the story. This character thinks their world is a dark place, the only way to a brighter world involves death (whether it’s “passing on” to the next life or leaving the old one better off), and the little fish has to show them that death isn’t the answer. If that includes wizards and magic and crazy tech, that’s fine, so long as the message is there!
