@tashah-claymore I’ve actually never experienced encountering one of my characters in real life. 🙁 That must have been fun. XD

@hope-ann I believe it! So many people, and for some reason you see the biggest cross-section of characters when they’re congregating in one place and are All Very Hungry. XD

@emgc *laughs* I’m totally the same way. I’ve written poems, and done worldbuilding while working and it’s honestly one of the best things.

@morreafirebird Hey, that bus ride was what it took to get that train of thought started, though! That is truly awesome.

@tinuviel Perfect! That’s so cool – and an awesome writerly habit. Keep it up!

@sageinthemeadow Fiery furnace?! Yikes. Tell me more about this job of yours. O.o

I go around to different power plants and steel yards around the country for my job, so I’ve seen some pretty awesome settings. One place I went to was TOTALLY a real-world version of Mordor/Isengard. It was so freaking awesome. That was the day I had to work like 10 hours in 25 degree weather. And yes, it was windy.
Also, the whole atmosphere in power plants is super awesome for steampunk vibes – pipes everywhere, steam pouring out of various stacks, huge machinery… it’s just very very fertile ground for my writing mind.

I actually had an idea spark into life because of all this. Still don’t know if I’m going to do anything with it, but the basic idea is that dragons are real and alive, and have been imprisoned: they are the furnaces that burn coal at power plants. Maybe this is the future for one of my fantasy worlds? Who knows. I just really really love the idea. Anyone know if it’s been done before?

Kickstarting this thread again with another question for everyone:

I recently learned about something called the Bechdel Test, which has to do with the way that women are represented in fiction. The test is this: <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>Does a fictional work include at least one instance where two or more women talk about something other than a man?</span> It’s not a litmus test for a good story, but it does help us focus on this specific aspect: realistic women. It got me thinking about the way I write women in my stories. So what about you?

Do your stories pass the Bechdel Test? If not, why do you think that is?
