@j-a-penrose This is a great subject to talk about! Alpha and beta readers are SO important to the writing process. Having fresh eyes on characters, a plot, and backstories you’ve thought of and rewritten a million times is super helpful. I currently have one friend who is reading my first drafts for me, so that I can know if a) this makes sense…[Read more]

@j-a-penrose *gives you coffee* *hopes you like coffee because there’s controversy on that subject* I totally relate; I guess we’ll have to push onward together 😛
Woo-wie! This is a toughie! I’ve never written this sort of thing before. We should make it very emotional. Like, life or death maybe? My immediate thoughts are that we need to give…[Read more]

@j-a-penrose I’m subscribed 🙂 Sorry I haven’t been active lately; I’ve come down with a cold, and school has been super hectic and stressful 😛 I’ll post more when things calm down 🙂

@j-a-penrose Maybe we could do a modern-day story then, with elements of a fairy tale in it? So it’s still sort of a guideline for us (making the writing easier under the time limit) and yet also not in such danger as to fall into the cliche category.

@trufflehunter Good point!
@silverclaw-bonnetfolly Awww that could be cute! What if Rapunzel was stuck in her tower for so long that her hair grew super long, not because a witch trapped her, but because she was afraid of heights? 😂 That was the next thing that came to me when I read the prompt 😛

@cassie-hartfinh That’s awesome.
@j-a-penrose Okay! Let’s brainstorm! 😃
If it’s not bittersweet, it therefore must be conclusive. Have a solid ending, like Cinderella does or something. She gets through the hardships, gets her prince ‘and they live happily ever after’. (okay maybe not very conclusive but pffffft you get my point)
Okay, this is…[Read more]

@steward-of-the-pen Here’s a tip from my own experience:
If the WIP you currently have isn’t fun or inspiring or something that makes you happy but you want to finish it… put it aside for now. I do this quite a bit, actually. If I get tired of a project, I switch to a different one that DOES make me happy and excited. Just keep switching back…[Read more]

@steward-of-the-pen That seriously sucks 😢 I’m sorry that you’re going through this.
I actually write down random story ideas I have, so while I love all of them, I’m sure I could share some with you. 😃 Maybe you could try writing them, or they could spark some inspiration? (They’re all good, since I only write down my good ones 😛 )

Julia replied to the topic Characters | Lesson 2 : The Basics in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 9 months ago
What do I think is a character’s purpose? Hmmm… I think… well, I think that the MC is meant to teach a lesson, and be the reason for a theme. All the other characters in the story are supposed to be facets of this, a piece of the puzzle that livingly represents the truth the character must learn in some way. (I read that in the…[Read more]

@j-a-penrose Whew! I am so late! Sorry about that. December didn’t let me check my email, and now I still have a lot of emails to go through. I’ll catch up eventually! 😛
1. What are three things you know about characters?
-I know that the main character should start the story in one way and end in another. (like in Cars, or A Christmas…[Read more]
