@morreafirebird I’m really glad to hear that they’ve been a reason for praise for you as you’ve gone through them. 🙂 It’s great to hear about how God has been working through the hard events of the last year for you to enable you to become a stronger writer. It’s so beautiful to be able to serve a God who can use even our sufferings for our own…[Read more]

@anne-of-lothlorien Those are some great thoughts! We have a great guide indeed. ^_^ I was travelling up to Harrisburg over the weekend of the 6th.
@obrian-of-the-surface-world Those do sound like some hard experiences to go through as you work on writing your story. I will certainly pray for you when I go out and pray later…[Read more]

Hey friends!
Just thought I’d touch base with you all a week later and see how this was going for you all. 🙂 I’m a couple days behind due to some travelling I did over the weekend, but have been appreciating going through this habit over this past week. Thinking through the Day Three prayer prompt in particular helped me to realize just how…[Read more]

@taylorclogston I’m sorry! Normally I’m able to find these for you, but this doesn’t appear to have shown up on our servers or in our spam filter. :/ I don’t know if there may have been an internet connectivity issue present here? But I unfortunately can’t find it. Sorry about that!

Frustrated Writers Don’t Need More Answers, They Need More Time with God

Very good article, Josiah!
Every writer claiming faith in their Creator must begin their writing journey by being grounded. And by grounded, I mean bowed knee recognizing that “every good and perfect gift” [James 1:17] comes from The Giver. We were created for His pleasure [Revelations 4:11] to bring Him honor in all we do. If we bring Him honor in our co-creating and commit it to Him [Psalms 37:5] He will raise it up, as we move into the stories in pursuit of finding Him through it. It will never change another life if it first does not change us.“I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. It doesn’t change God – it changes me.”
— C. S. Lewis-

In my latest article published today, I talk about the value of praying regularly about our writing–and also provided a four-week guide in how to do so.
Starting tomorrow on Friday, November 5th, I’m committing to using this guide over the next four weeks to practice what I preach and train myself to do this more regularly.
Does anyone else…[Read more]

@wordsmith Yes–highly proficient writers certainly still read! But in terms of reading for the purposes of studying the craft, the brand new writer who picks up a novel to read it analytically will obviously grow more as a writer through it than, say, Stephen King does. 😛 So while skilled writers may read less, as you said, their reasons…[Read more]

3 Lessons Christian Storytellers Can Learn from Adventures in Odyssey

THERE’S AN ADVENTURES IN ODYSSEY ARTICLE?!?!?! WHAT IS THIS?!!? *deep thanks to Hope Ann for pointing me here through her fabulous newsletter*
I’ve grown up on/am still growing up on AIO. A lot of the time these days it’s my dad who has us start an episode after supper. XD He’s like 40 now and grew up on those. *applauds Odyssey for surviving this long*
I am gonna say though… AIO’s been on a decline recently. Their new episodes just aren’t as… good as the others. Sure, the sound, music, etc. is better quality, but the messages are a lot harder to pick out and some episodes (*cough* “California Dreams” *cough cough*) seemed forced and useless.
BUT! Overall, Odyssey is a great thing to learn from! Thanks for the article!

This was such an enjoyable article! I grew up on Adventures in Odyssey and still listen to them regularly. 🙂 I’ve always appreciated their willingness to tackle things like divorce, death, miscarriage, family in prison, gender, marriage issues, and the list goes on and on! My whole family is actually listening to The Ties That Bind right now and we’re using their discussion guide every week – we’ve had some amazing conversations about all the character development and lessons!
(May I take issue with the fact that you said you were no longer in their target audience, though? I’m sure most people would say it’s for kids… but I think the target audience is families, so you’re never going to be too old for that. 😉 )

Thanks for starting this discussion @LRC and @Shannon! My sentiments align more with @noah-cochran on this one, though. While I do agree that it’s too much to say that your writing will “suffer” if you aren’t constantly reading books, I rarely hear even bestselling/award-winning authors suggest that they’ve “made it” and don’t need additional…[Read more]
