If there was one thing I least enjoyed when I first started writing, it was world building. I found it boring, pointless, and frankly I just wanted to write my book without having to worry about details.

And now here I am doing a post about world building. What has the world come to?? 😛

I’m not going to pretend to be an expert at this, because I’m not. I still have a tendency to do as little world building as possible and just focus on the characters and the plot instead. There’s room for everyone to grow.

Basically, I’m going to have a very brief look at why world building is important and how I do it, then I want to know how you do it.

    Why is World Building Important?

Reading a book is about being engaged in the story and really living it. That’s why we want to write them with prose that sounds alive, with vivid descriptions, living, breathing characters.

World building is about having your world and setting clear in your own mind, so that you can write it in a way that will be clear for the readers too. Whether it’s a real modern setting or a high fantasy world that you’re developing from scratch, it needs to be clear and realistic so that your readers are engaged by it.

    My World Building Process

It’s all about the pinterest boards. 😂 I make a pinterest board for every story I write, and I find pictures of the animals or the landscapes and the different elements of culture and life that these characters experience. I also write down some basic concepts of the world elements and how they’re similar or different to the real world.

It’s very basic, and I’m still trying to develop it more–because I need to stop skimming over these details so often–but it’s a start.

Your turn: What do you do when world building? What’s your method? Do you have any processes you’ve seen other people doing, but haven’t tried yet yourself?
