Yeah, physical descriptions are tricky to do without info dumping or sounding awkward. Here’s some things I try to keep in mind when I’m writing description:

• Relevance to story (be it theme, plot, or character)
• The character’s POV (there’s an article on that here if you haven’t seen it yet).
• And emotion.

From what I have learned, @coggleton, you would apply it to a series with the same basic principles as any one story. Only you have to stretch it out more. So each book of the series would have the 6 basic plot points and looking at the series as a whole you’d be able to see the 6 points as well.
