Books are meant to be read, but boring, skippable scenes defy this purpose. If readers are skimming pages like the advertisement section of a newspaper, the story isnβt fulfilling its design.

Gabrielle Pollack replied to the topic Taboos in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 3 months ago
J.K. Rowling uses taboo in her Harry Potter books. In her story world, wizards are scared of saying the villain Voldemort’s name and simply refer to him as You-Know-Who orΒ He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. This emphasizes the story world’s history and builds the villain’s reputation. Voldemort was such an evil person that, even after his supposed death,…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb Firstly, thank you for mentioning Believe Me. *thumbs up* That movie is cool.
Secondly, that would be a totally epic ending! I love it. π As long as there is enough interaction and reaction in there to count as a conversion scene, if that makes sense.

Sometimes characters come to us in pieces. A whisper of dialogue, a murmur of a dream, or even a feeling can ignite a glimmer of inspiration that demands to become a person. But a character is more than a rushed […]

I love this article, Gabby! 🧡 You made some great points, especially the part about motivations being fluid. Is it just me, or does your dialogue prompt bear a slight resemblance to your novel, Rook? Because thatβs instantly what I thought of when I read it. 😉

Can’t thank you enough for this article. I loved the example you gave for the backstory bit. My protagonists voice seemed so stale (especially compared to the very interesting side characters). Whilst reading though, I was flooded with ideas; I think I might of fixed him! Hopefully. Now to write it all down before I forget. π

Point one was super helpful for me! Thanks, Gabrielle!
Yay! π Thanks for giving it a read. π
way to go Gabrielle! I love how deep this princess movie is, despite the hype about Let It Go. XD
XD I know, right?
Ooh, this was helpful! Thank you!
I’m glad it helped. π
This gives so much to chew on and think about! I’m intrigued by the forward motion concept. The idea that each individual scene should end in such a way that the protagonist cannot go back to the way things were is new to me, and very curious. It sounds dramatic, but it also kind of makes sense.
I know right? It’s really interesting to think about. π I love how storytelling works.
Me, too! And I LOVE learning more about it!
Loved this article! Definitely something I’ll need to think about in regards to some of my scenes. π
Great job, Gabrielle!
I’m happy you enjoyed it! Also, love your profile. XD
