Love this, Gabrielle! π Thank you! I’ll need to bookmark this one for future reference.
P.S. Loved the Marvel examples you gave π Civil War is one of my favorite Marvel films. And very timely, too – ahem, ahem Endgame.

Planning a story about indentured servants. Obviously gonna be full of tragedy and pain and one character gets sold into slavery at the end so this article was fantastic!!!
-
Whoa, your poor character. *hugs him* I’m glad this article was relevant. π

Gabrielle, thank you for sharing this. I think it’s definitely easy to fall into the category of authors who just throw random things that make the story interesting in just for the sake of getting it in. I so appreciated what you talked about under “make pain meaningful” and “tragic stories mirror reality”. So true–thanks for this great reminder <3

I’m glad it was a good reminder! π Thanks for reading.

@cassandraia I know you have XD No worries, you have been on my list for a while.
@wordsmith First of all…You’re an INTJ? I didn’t know that.
Secondly, YAY! I will add you to the list. If you are sure. I don’t want you to overload yourself and then get stressed out (because I do that all the time and it stinks).

@eden-anderson Nope, you’re not the only one! XD And @Kate had some good words to say on parental support. I’ve felt the way you do at certain points in the journey, and it is tough. Hey writers!
I’m looking for about five or six more betas for my WIP, Ridgeline. Here’s the basic info:
Pitch: Ridgeline is about a snarky immortal who, in an attempt to save his eternal life, steps into the mortal world. Before he can gain the knowledge he needs, heβs dragged into the lives of three desperate humans and their fight to survive t…[Read more]

What a great article, Gabrielle! Your first point about merging character archetypes to support the theme (like love interest and mentor) made me think of Emma from Fawkes. She already knows the answer to the thematic question and serves as both a guide and love interest to Thomas. Thomas’s father is also a great foil to Emma/Thomas. Thomas can either follow his father’s example or Emma’s and that incorporates theme so well into the story’s conflict in Fawkes.
I was thinking of her as I wrote that section. π She is a fantastic love interest/mentor. And you’re right, Thomas was being pulled between her and his father. It really highlighted the theme. That book is so good. <3
I love this article! Practical and helpful.
Thank you so much! π
This is a lifesaver. Thank you xD
I can also say that the last step, patience, works really well. I set aside a series two years ago and now it’s a million times better due to all the ideas I’ve gathered. (unfortunately, more pain for Tairock, too π )
Glad to help. π
It does! Letting time pass can really help the little brain cells.
Aw I’m so happy you’re still working on it. π (Why do you have to go punish my baby Tairock? Why? π )
Wow, this is so helpful!! Thanks so much Gabrielle!!
Yay! Thank you for reading. π
Glad I could help! Combining ideas can be super fun. It’s cool to see what premises pop up. π
Aw thanks! I love that word as well. XD
