Hey friends and fellow artists! How are things going?
I’ve been super inactive lately due to weird computer problems that wouldn’t let me pull up the SE site. Anyway, that’s fixed now, so I figured I’d pop in and see how everyone’s doing. How have you been? Have you been creating any new art? (I would love to see it if you have! 🙂 ) And if not,…[Read more]

Hey folks,
We’ve got a new guild war. This could be a good lesson in worldbuilding for speculative, historical, or contemporary authors…pretty much anybody.
Prompt: write a story in which two cultures clash.

Daeus Lamb replied to the topic The Elements of an Eerie Antagonist – what makes a villain frightening? in the forum New Wessex Writing Discussions 6 years, 8 months ago
If we’re really talking the fear factor, I don’t see many villains like that.
In the original edition of The Sword in the Stars (I haven’t read the rewritten version to know if it’s changed), the villain is a creep because:
- He’s powerful.
- He has no regrets.
- He’s twisted and you get to see some of the twisted things he…

I love all these thoughts so far! The two main divisions between relatable villains and inhumane villains are especially helpful.
Also, as someone who is currently reading “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,” I feel like it would do us well to look at some real-life villains.
Hitler, whom many believe was possessed. His main agenda was to…[Read more]

Yes, that scene with Bilbo…so scary. Arguably, though, it actually magnifies the power of Sauron (or maybe the ring) by showing how much of a hold the ring can have on people’s hearts.
One example of a villain that scared me was the Joker in The Dark Knight — the way he was always on top of things and one step ahead of the good g…[Read more]

I agree with you @r-m-archer on both points about villains not having a conscience or not being a threat to the main character. I think those are both important factors to creating creepy villains.
Are you going to tell us what you think, @ethryndal because I’m really interested in hearing your thoughts. 😉

@ethryndal Ooh, this is going to be fun!!
Have to agree with you about that Bilbo scene in the LOTR…I think it’s like the creepiest scene in the whole movie. It scared the heebie-jeebies out of me the first time I saw it. 😨
I have different theories about what makes a villain scary, but I think the a big one is how relatable-or human-the…[Read more]

Hey guys!
Three announcements concerning New Wessex.
1. I know sometimes community building, brainstorming, etc can be difficult on a forum. So I’m going to run an experiment. I’m going to create a group chat. You guys vote. It could be Facebook, it could be Hangouts. We’ll see how it goes. 😛
2. The guilds as a whole have decided to stop doing…[Read more]

I agree with Grace though, we should try to finish brainstorming this thing so we can get it done. So we need to figure out the name and details of our MC, what exactly is the crime, who was either murdered or kidnapped, and what was the motive of who did it? And any details I might have forgotten. 🙂

I like what we have so far! But like many other people said, I’m way out of my league here, so Imma sit back and watch y’all do your thing, and then come back during editing time 🙂
To summarize what’s been going on so far: Our MC has amnesia (TGA) and it is this fact that makes the audience initially believe that it was him that…[Read more]

I was originally talking about the MC having amnesia–but I’m cool with fleshing out whatever idea we settle on.
As for the MC being the culprit, it’s a cool idea and I think we could definitely make it work! Though, I have seen it a couple times before… What if we we set it up to make it look like MC did it (have the…[Read more]

Big families are wonderful–though yes, chaotic too! It’s especially hard when trauma is involved (I know a lot about the foster care system if anyone ever needs knowledge hmu) but I have never seen God’s amazing power more than now, as we go through everyday life. 🙂 It’s honestly the best thing in the world and I wouldn’t change…[Read more] -

Dealing with multiple ideas
Most writers have more story ideas than they know what to do with. If you’re in this boat, you need to know how to cut through the clutter and make the right decisions. Here are a few things I’ve learned that have helped me.
Write everything down
Writing your story ideas down cements them in your brain. You’ll be ab…[Read more]
