Praying for you!!
I volunteer with a public school kids program and I know how frustrating it can be when kids just won’t come to events…my prayers are with you and your church! (I’d love to hear how it ends…🙂)

Howdy, y’all!
Not a very Saxon greeting, but whatever.
We’re talking about worldbuilding today and as I was thinking about this I remembered one of my favorite things about fantasy (this lesson applies to all genres, trust me). Fantasy, particularly, is the genre that revolves around the importance of the past. That might sound weird because HF…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb replied to the topic An argument: charm is found in the unexplored in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 6 months ago
@msqueen That’s very true! Now, I feel like theme is less important for charm in the very beginning of the story, but the more it progresses it definitely plays a part.
@corissa I think the “the more you know the more you know how little you know” rule applies equally across all genres. I think that fantasy writers are just better at it…[Read more]

1. Yes, we need to put in more indicators of it being a dream. I think we can have Ryan know he’s dreaming, because he knows she’s dead. Go ahead and edit it. I plan on working on it later this morning.
2. Agreed. I’ll try to explain each one here:
The hat: A friend of ours has looked extensively into common dream…[Read more]

Alright guys, here’s the first draft:
I imagine it needs some sensory details added. Also, I kind of skipped over the regret part. We either need to add that in, or completely eradicate all traces of it. And I think I may have left a few traces.
Anyway, there it is. Let me know what you think about it. If it doesn’t make you cry,…[Read more]

@literatureforthelight Okay, I think I can do that.
Here’s what I’m planning on doing:
Written in first person present tense. He’s a concert pianist that plays jazz. It’s backstage just before the first concert, and he can’t find his hat. And he’s deathly afraid of going onstage without his hat. But his tour manager comes up and urges him to go…[Read more]

A couple more ideas:
What if they were chefs? They were childhood sweethearts that both dreamed to be big chefs one day. She died before the dream could be fulfilled, and it’s the night before he goes in for the first day of being a real chef, and he’s afraid he won’t measure up… ? He wouldn’t necessarily have regret in this case, but maybe he…[Read more]

@noahlitle nobody deserved that woman— not even Mr. Elton.
@corissa I love that. Particularly the part where she dies and he doesn’t want to go on.

Oooh, I love the concert pianist idea! And I vote for it being his wife.
@corissa Your idea just there… it just melted my heart, about how he learned piano just for his wife, only for it to spiral into regret… I want to build off that to suggest that the guilt makes him absolutely lose his focus, so he couldn’t play it properly before she…[Read more]

@kate Poor Mr. Elton?! He deserved her. XD Wait, you’ve seen that version of Emma?
Hm. What if it was his father? Instead of his brother? His father forced him to practice piano and become a concert pianist, because his father was crippled and could never accomplish his dream of becoming a concert pianist. Or perhaps his father has a cri…[Read more]

@noahlitle wow, just what this conversation needed. Mrs. E. XD Poor Mr. Elton…
The toy-designer could be fine. I feel like it lacks any serious emotional kick though.
A few ideas for our pianist… he’s deaf/blind/mute/crippled… he literally left his wife/family for his career, and the day before what should have been the crowning…[Read more]

@corissa That’s a great idea.
What are some ideas for what he does in the dream?
I was thinking maybe a military type parachute jump, but I don’t know anything about that, so that’s probably not a good idea. What’s something that he would be nervous/scared to do the night before, and could possibly lead to guilt about his wife’s death?
That’s a…[Read more]

I really like @literatureforthelight ‘s idea. I really, really like that idea.
I think we could combine it with the regret idea, in the way that @corissa described.
So, he’s doing something in his dream, and through the course of his dream his late wife starts helping him in a way that is reminiscent of the moment he regrets, and the dream e…[Read more]

Okay, guys. Here’s the names I came up with:
Pravus-Hasan
Salus-Sharun
I just looked up the Latin and Arabic words for good and evil, and combined them.
Thank you everyone for your ideas. I’m not entirely satisfied with it, so I might come be back in the future. Maybe. I don’t know.

@Eden-anderson wellll… the one @daeus-lamb is talking about isn’t published yet and probably won’t be for a while. 😛 He threw me for a bit of a loop with singling me out here, because I really haven’t the slightest clue about how to do that intentionally. My secret’s out. I’m just an accidental genius.
But as I have been tagged…[Read more]
