    Hey Guys!

    Let’s talk about story endings.

(Full disclosure, there’s actually a guild war going on about endings rn, but I missed the announcement to the guildmasters and I don’t want to rush everyone to come up with something in a week, so we’re going to sit this one out and just do some brainstorming.)

So… let’s talk about happy endings, with a focus on 1) what makes an ending happy and 2) what makes an ending cliche?

I think two things make for happy endings:
    1. The characters are happy at the end (obviously)
    2. The positive ideal triumphs.  (ie, if the story is about forgiveness, then in the end forgiveness wins out over revenge)

I think both are important because the underlying thrust of the theme adds weight to the surface happiness of the characters.

Cliche endings are a little harder to define.  I mean there’s the obvious riding off into the sunset, but even that can be made not cliche if handled correctly.  For me, I think the “cliche” ending is really a misnomer of the “predictable” ending.  I know people who don’t like it when every story thread circles around and tie up nicely, but I feel like that’s part of what makes a story a story and not just a rambling of things that happened.  Your thoughts?

What are some of your favorite happy endings, and some of your least favorite cliches?  Have a grand week!
