We got a lot done on chat last night. We worked out the style, tone and problem of our story. To sum it all up: The story will be told like it is a video game, although the fact that it is a game is not directly mentioned.
Ready? Let’s begin.
<You approach the testing chamber. [Description placeholder because it will take me too long to come up with one on my own] A sterile voice speaks to you.>
Place the specitrical cube on the elongated circle.
<You look around. You don’t know what that is, but there is a box next to the wall.>
Yes, that one.
Congratulations you have demonstrated you can place a box on a button. Let’s continue.
Note: This is just an example of the style we decided on, and not necessarily the setting the story will be placed in.
The Narrator is a guide at first, instructing the character how to overcome obstacles, but as challenges get harder and NPCs are dying around the character, the player realizes the Narrator is actually evil, (perhaps by realizing the player does better when he ignores the Narrator’s instructions.) and confronts him in a final battle. Both die, and the final line is <Player One: you have died.>
I’m really excited about this story, but I have to acknowledge that it sounds hard to pull off in 2500 words. @karthmin has offered to be one of the writers, but he can’t do it by himself. Does anyone else want to help write the story?
The plan is to nail down the setting in Hangouts later today. I went ahead and made the writing doc, since I will be on vacation starting tomorrow, and am not sure how available I will be. It’s here. You don’t need to start writing yet, but I wanted it to be available for when when y’all are ready.
Some people have asked about referring to yourself AT ALL in the story. Karthmin asked the other guild masters, and they said: “The first person insertion should be fine if it is occasional. Too much and it would start to sound like a first person story with a loquacious narrator.”
Does anybody have any questions?
