I know I keep saying that I’ll be more consistent on here…but honestly, I keep forgetting 🙂
Anyway, here’s a question:
what’s one interesting fact you learnt from a his-fic book?
I learnt from The Eagle of the Ninth that the ancient British tattooed themselves. This surprised me, because I’d thought that Captain Cook, when he’d returned from…[Read more]

I can finally hop onto this thread. xD (Can I say thank you @josiah for not putting what you thought in the original post?? The temptation of reading that received notification email would have been too much.)
Where do I start though? There is so much about this movie. Its plot. Its plot holes. Its characters. Its making (11 years process…[Read more]

Hi everybody!
I am hoping to become a professional editor, and was wondering whether anyone had a manuscript they wanted beta read/edited for them. I haven’t had a ton of experience, but I just wanted to offer my services!
Thanks everybody!

I swear I haven’t forgotten you all, just have had a really bad and crazy busy few weeks.
So I’m back again!
The question for this week is:
What is a common historical inaccuracy that really annoys you? (If you need to rant, feel free to include more than one!)
@rochellaine @valtmy @ lin @northerner @Michelle @pursuewisdom
(I think that’s everyone)

I was gone too long again. I feel like I missed so much! First of all, hello @lin! 😀 Welcome! That’s a very interesting selection of time periods/places you like! Have you read the Viking Quest series by Lois Walfrid Johnson? And how old are you? (If you’re willing to say.)
I see the confusion about @valtmy was resolved, but I’m here…[Read more]

@valtmy Ahh. In that case, never mind. Historical fantasy is a different animal — sort of a chimera. But since you hadn’t previously claimed that genre, and popped into a historical fiction thread to express a conflicting set of principles, I was confused. In context it makes sense.
Yes, the difficulty with accurately telling a story about…[Read more]

Thank you so much for the list! She actually does have a soft side, and becomes a healer eventually(well, she’s still a warrior with impressive swordsmanship as well, but she becomes a healer to help her friends and new-found family since they all have a stubborn mentality when it comes to taking care of themselves…. let’s…[Read more]

@valtmy. . . if you don’t care for historical accuracy, why are you writing things set in a different time, in the first place? Why not write fantasy instead? If you claim to tell a story about a particular era but don’t portray it as it was, readers who don’t know better will walk away from your book with a false picture of the era in mind. That…[Read more]

@the-fledgling-artist I agree. Sometimes we have to make hard choices but after all it’s all for His glory.
@daeus-lamb I’m not necessary thinking of idolatry. Though that could be a problem too. I’m more concerned about if we should portray God in a made up world at all. Like Ashira said, to me that would be dangerous ground to walk on. This…[Read more]

Hello, Selah! *waves*
I like what you said about portraying the typical beliefs of people from the given era correctly. I think it’s important to try to step into our characters’ shoes.
Your last paragraph…YES. Characters are the key.

Here’s our discussion question for the week. It’s a bit more serious than the last few and I’m really interested to hear your opinions.
How do you, personally, strike a balance between historical accuracy and ideas and beliefs that are now considered outdated or offensive (for example, views on slavery, colonialism, women, etc)?Â
