@evelyn I have no problem finding faults in my writing. It is finding something I’m good at I can’t find.
@shadowwriter161 Thanks for the offer. I actually have three or four other people from Story Embers helping me with my book, but if you really want to read it you can go ahead. I won’t refuse the help.

*gasps* You’ve run out of books?! *runs around hysterically, gathering chocolate, tea, blankets, and book suggestions* *throws pile at you*
Ok so. Divergent series by Veronica Roth I think. I may be mixing her and Christina Meyer up because I read Twilight, Divergent, and Trials of Apollo all in the same week (Not a good idea.…[Read more]

Of the Wingfeather Saga? I have not read those, I was just tagging another friend that loves them. π

In relation to your question about getting inside a character’s head, a huge thing for me when writing and reading is how that character perceives the world.
Is your character pessimistic, optimistic, or realistic? Practical and focused, or a bit of a dreamer or idealist? If someone offers them help that they obviously need, do…[Read more]

Oo, that is an awesome question!
One thing would be just researching (or detailed worldbuilding for fantasy writers) a lot, so that you really understand where the individual character is coming from/how they think.
Also, studying the personality types here so that you understand the brains of a lot of different personalities,…[Read more]

Well, it is a lot of self-evaluation, and I know people who have taken it and come out with a super high rank when I have read their writing and consider it not nearly that good, lol! Thus I don’t really know how accurate that estimate is of me until I actually finish and publish a book, I guess. π
I have been writing…[Read more]

@shadowwriter161 The first book in the Ranger’s Apprentice series isΒ The Ruins of Gorlan. He (John Flanagan) also has a Brotherband Chronicles Series which starts with The Outcasts.Β
Some other suggestions include: The Lord of the Rings trilogy/Silmarillion (which are loooong but totally worth it), The S…[Read more]

You have a ton of awesome advice thus far! I will just say as well….make your characters unique. Make them individual…everyone in real life will have their own unique strengths and weaknesses, and portraying that in your characters really brings them to life to your reader.
I’m glad you are here, as well. SE is indeed an…[Read more]

Ditto to what @wordsmith and @princess-foo said. If you know what kinds of things you want to have in the story (or are necessary to the plotline), that can narrow it down quite a bit. England is such an amazing place to set a book in!

@shadowwriter161 The Mistmantle Chronicles! (Book one is called Urchin of the Riding Stars.) It’s written for younger readers and it’s pretty obscure, but it’s BEAUTIFUL. It’s also rare and pretty expensive to buy, but your local library probably has it.

Have you ever read anything by Eloise Jarvis McGraw? Or Douglas Bond? They write his-fic, but it is SUPER awesome and very intriguing. Baroness Orczy’s books on the Scarlet Pimpernel are amazing, as well…I read them recently. You can read them for free or print them off here (along…[Read more]

Fawkes looks like it blends Historical Fiction and Fantasy elements which sounds pretty cool. I also like the fact the author puts the main character in a dilemma of choices. I may have to check it out. π
