    Ereki one and all!

I got a green light just yesterday to go ahead and give this a shot! Because we are going outside of the Story Embers forum to do this, keep in mind that this isn’t endorsed, or monitored by anyone from the Story Embers staff. It’s a bunch of friends trying to create a stronger community, basically, and that’s just about it. (Also, none of the other guilds have done this yet so we’re volunteering ourselves to be guinea pigs, too ;P)

Whenever we do end up forming a group chat (on whichever platform we choose), please follow the same rules of conduct as you would around the forum. I will be acting as the monitor and enforcer of rules.

So we have a few options, as far as platform goes.

    1. The first (most versatile, in my opinion), is Discord. It is a messaging/forum app that is pretty easy to use, and would fit well for maintaining different conversations distinctly in different threads. In case you’re not aware of this app, you literally make your own private community and there’s not really a public side to it. I would have complete control over who could and could not join our server.

In addition, we could do voice chats (no video) on Discord, and it’s basically just like having someone on the phone, but anyone(s) from the group can join.

You can also PM on the Discord.

Because of it’s versatility, my vote goes to Discord.

    2. The second option is Messenger. One does not need a Facebook account to get Messenger, so it would not be prohibitive to those who do not have or want FB. You can get Messenger as an independent app nowadays. I don’t know about on laptops, but I know you can do that on a phone and I don’t see why not for a laptop.

Unless we created multiple group conversations, we would have all of our conversation in one place, and pertinent things might get lost in the flow of conversation. However, it is very easy to transition from chat to video calls (which we will hopefully be doing in the near future as well). So that’s something which Discord doesn’t have.

    3. The third option is Google Hangouts, which is basically the same deal as Messenger. Some people say it’s better for video chats. I don’t really know for sure either way, but Messenger and Hangouts are pretty much equally versatile. If you don’t have a Gmail address, you can still download and use the app, I believe.

So there you have it! We’re going to create a group chat! Remember, this is to foster community as WRITERS. We are doing this to promote our ability to help one another and remain involved and investing in each other – not just to hang out. Some of that is fine, but the last thing I want to do is create another distraction from writing.

If you do not want to be a part of the group chat or video activities, just let me know in either this thread or the other one. I completely understand. Internet safety is very important, and we each have to make our decisions. In addition, if the time investment in a group chat would be too great, I understand that as well.
This is a largely experimental move. Don’t feel pressure if you aren’t sure about live chats, etc…
