Karthmin started the topic CD Week 7: backstory (discussion) in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 5 months ago
Hello Ereki!
I am, once again, famously belated.
*drapes coat over chair back and sits down quickly*
So. A little backstory about why I’m so late tonight…
*coughs*
First, I was at a surprise birthday party for a friend last night after the evening church service, and that’s normally when I prepare my posts for the beginning of the week.
Second, I didn’t do the best with being diligent this evening after I got home from work. So this is a very late appearing post.
And that, my friends, was backstory.
Well, not really in the writing sense. But in the broadest sense of the word, it’s true. Backstory is any part of a character’s life which happens before the story begins.
It also just happens to be our topic of discussion this week, and again, it ties in well as a progression from last week. One of the things that can help us discover a strong voice for our character’s is examining their backstory.
Instead of dumping all of my main discussion on the first day, I wanted to take a look at this topic throughout the week, making a few different posts to help guide the discussion a little bit.
To kick things off:
Backstory and Voice
A character’s voice must be carefully and purposefully shaped by their backstory. This gives internal consistency to your character, making them feel more real to the reader. As you develop your character’s voices, how important are their backstories? Is this something you consider at all?
