@tinuviel Frodo is a very complex character that was NOT given justice either by the script of the movies, or by Elijah Wood’s acting. I mean, he did alright, but Frodo isn’t a baby-faced drama-queen. He’s… yeah. He’s way more than that, and they didn’t get much nuance with him. Just a lot of “looks-like-I’m-gonna-puke-on-this-ring” moments.

@seekjustice That sounds like an awesome idea! Do you want to organize that? I don’t want to take that away from you.
But if you’d rather not, I can get the ball rolling. š

…well, I’m moving tomorrow! So that’s my main goal. XD
While I’m here, I think I’ll go ahead and post ahead of schedule for next week’s goals. I’m hoping to…
– keep writing the TYF short story
– keep up/catch up with Inktober

@erekdale We’re planning our Second Monthly Video Call this coming Monday night at 6:00 PM EST! The first one was a success (for an exclusively introverted crowd, I think we did pretty good, anyway). XD
And now we’re going to go for round two. This call will have a main discussion topic to start off with, and then we’ll see where the conversation…[Read more]

Great article! Thank you!
One slight note: It’s not *quite* accurate to mention Ronan art in the mythical stage when you dated it approximately 800 B.C., and the legendary founding of the Roman Empire is 753 B.C.; finally, considering that culture takes time to build. But you did date it approximately, so I’ll take my nerd self out now! Once again, a very good article!
-
Whoops! Thanks for pointing that out! The dates are intended to be approximate, as you noted, but you’re right. That’s a bit outside the range given for the mythical stage.
Thank you! I’m glad you appreciated it!

I love your example of this in Ancient Egypt! What a fascinating dynamic!
I’m glad you enjoyed this article and I really hope it helps in your world building.

No problem, Grandma! I’m glad you were able to check it out. Thank you for reading.
I’m glad to hear that you are tackling life “with a smile and a hug”. Excellent words to live by.
Love you,

Good thoughts, Nathanael! Thanks for popping in with a comment. Always good to hear from you.
You’re right. I didn’t put the word ‘worldview’ to these gradual shifts, but its perfectly valid to do so. It’s fascinating to consider how much thought has changed over the centuries – to the point that, as you mentioned, the acting presuppositions of modern day atheists and theists may be more similar to one another than to ancient thought.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance to explore Lewis’ Allegory of Love, and I’m not familiar with Barfield’s theory that you mentioned. My interest is piqued, however.
Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed this article!

This is a great article! The two cultures that clash in my fantasy novel are both in the mythical stage, though one is slightly more advanced and moving toward classical. Neither have a written language, but they have several complex spoken and signed languages and tell their stories and myths through dance and chants.
One thing I’ve noticed is that in cultures pre-intelectual the people seem to be much more united by a single religion or set of values, whereas as intellectualism advances cultures begin to fragment in terms of what people believe and who or what they believe in. I think a lot of fantasy novels get that wrong and just have one religion per country/region/people when realistically there would be lots of other religions by that stage and there would be a lot of fragmenting by the people as they begin to chose their own beliefs, rather than just accepting those of their parents.-
Thanks for adding to the discussion here, Chelsea! I think you’re right. Most of the time fantasy cultures are presented almost as monocultures. It’s certainly easy to create one oversimplification per culture – but it makes for less realistic, enjoyable reading.

@tinuviel Oooooooh! What a turnaround from the normal “What are your favorite books?” questions! I like this.
For me, I think my favorite part of a book is when the characters (and me!) get a strong feel for the things they have lost and left behind through the process of their growth, and through the happenings of the plot. Best example would be…[Read more]

@devastate-lasting @tinuviel I really like your perspective on this. It seems to be the best way to approach things.
