I recently made a big breakthrough. As you may know, whether you write speculative or real-world fiction, you need to do research for your story feel authentic and rich.

But… research is hard. Particularly if all you want to read is fiction, like me. 😉

Enter audiobooks. For me at least, audiobooks take almost no commitment to plow through. It’s a passive activity. I’ve discovered that I have about 45min of open time a day when I’m making meals (yeah, I cook). Dig into your schedule and you might find a similar open time block. If you listen on 1.5 or double speed, you can get through a lot in a short time.

Audible is ever-lovely, or you can rent audiobooks from your library. Personally, I’m just feasting on librivox books. I read The Art of War in a day and just started Marco Polo’s book — I figure it will help with developing fantasy cultures. After that, I’m thinking about reading Dumas’ Celebrated Crimes, because what story can’t use a picklock or a heist?

Have you ever thought about using audiobooks? What are some research hacks you use?
